We visited Vi Que kitchen in November 2023 during our 1 week vacation. Since we are vegetarians and it was our first time in SE Asia, I had looked up vegetarian friendly restaurants in Vietnam and had targeted a few of them as "must go" places. Vi Que kitchen was one of them. I had started communicating via email with Vi Que Kitchen a couple of weeks before my vacation; I wanted to confirm that they did not use MSG in their dishes and also get the menu in English . Mr Viral Desai the owner / manager of the restaurant communicated with me via email and confirmed no MSG and was very prompt and detailed in his communications offering me loads of information. He sent me the full menu in English (one of a kind menu that is just amazing) as is actually like a short book giving you history of the dishes and the family since many of the dishes are based on the chef's family. Developing the menu and associated history/background, must have taken quite a while and I was very very impressed with the menu and you could sense how much pride the chef and owners had to develop that menu (you have to see the menu on the website) . Just reading the menu made me hungry and want to visit the restaurant. I wish all restaurants took such care and pride in developing their menu and providing the associated detail. I made a reservation in advance to ensure I don't miss the chance to go to this restaurant
Food - Having seen the menu ahead of time, theoretically I wanted to try so many things but realistically it was only me and my wife so we picked 3 items - Papaya delight salad, Spring rolls and Bun Hue (recommended by the owner and server). All of the food was sumptuous and quality and presentation was excellent. The papaya salad was very very good and really nice balance of tart, spice & sweet and my wife who loves papaya salad gave it a thumbs up. The spring rolls were very good and a unique filling of purple sweet potatoes, taro, various types of mushrooms, mung beans and leek. Very flavorful and crispy. Then we went for something unique that we had not had and the server and owner recommended Bun Hue a special dish from the cuisine of Hue province. Since this had a lot of mushrooms and my wife does not prefer too many mushrooms, they were nice to adjust it and replace the mushrooms with other Vietnamese vegetables and greens. The flavor of the dish was really nice and different; although it was less brothy than we expected we enjoyed it. All in all very unique and authentic Vietnamese dishes and had a fantastic dinner. I wish I had come with more people so could have sampled more dishes and or wish I had more time to go to Vi Que again
Service - we got amazing service from the Host (Camni I believe was her name) and Nam our waiter. They were very patient with us as we asked alot of questions and asking for suggestions from them. They answered all our questions and if not sure went to kitchen and got us the answer. When we were talking and I told them that I had communicated with Viral Desai, they even went the extra step to see if Viral was available and could stop by. I honestly had not expected Viral to be there but he actually came over and spent several minutes chatting with us explaining how him and his wife (the chef) came up with the idea of the restaurant and how they wanted to make it unique in terms of focusing on family recipes and add some history to that in their menu. It was really nice of him to stop by and chat with us!
Ambiance - nice cozy family style ambiance with some photos and artifacts of vietnamese food, spices and culture.
Overall value - excellent and if you are in Ho Chi Minh City definitely go to Vi Que for a vegetarian/vegan meal; even if you are not a vegetarian/vegan, you will like the food and service. And as noted earlier, the menu is amazing in terms of the layout, photos and detail/history.
Thank you (cam on) to Viral, Camni & Nam and the chef for providing fantastic food & service and creating a memorable Vietnam dining...
Read morewent there yesterday, beautiful interior and nice food (morning glory, bok choy and grilled eggplant) , though it’s a bit pricey. unfortunately that’s it. when it comes to the service, it was a huge disappointment and that even affected our mood and appetite… while i was waiting for my friend, i ordered from a nice waitress a lemon soda in advance. by the time my friend came and we started to choose dishes from the menu, was still with no soda. took us some time to finally stop someone so we could order, it was a early mentioned waitress. ordered the food with special request - less oily as both of us are not used to greasy food. when i asked her about my soda i ordered 15 minutes ago, she said that they are very busy today, which i totally understood, though seeing the staff passing through me with much more complicated drinks/cocktails made me wonder how hard it must be to prepare the soda… anyways after taking our order it was the last time we saw her up there, then there was just male staff. after 35 minutes of waiting for our drinks i had to stopped one of the waiters (tall skinny guy with glasses, unfortunately i forgot to asked his name) and he immediately went to get it for us. a little after our drinks we got first dishes of our order, but no chopsticks. there was no one around to ask for the chopsticks so about 7 minutes later finally someone from the staff appeared. by the time we got our chopsticks the food was already cold and found it quite greasy. when our last dish arrived with really dry rice, the eggplant was cold as well. i think i talked to the manager (a girl in black shirt) who immediately took the dishes to heat them which i appreciate a lot. when they brought us the dishes, it was a bit better, but we did not want to ask for anything anymore as we were really hungry from our long journey from da lat. during this whole time while we were eating, no one went to check on us whether everything is okay and if we need something else which is quite sad as we saw that they were checking on other tables where everything went smooth. when we were leaving and saying goodbye to the staff downstairs (including the manager) no one said goodbye back… anyways, big shout out to the tall skinny guy with glasses, handled everything perfectly, apologized for everything, gave us those drinks for free and a 10% discount. hope he’s gonna get promoted and wish him...
