Adelaide Festival Centre, Australia's first multi-purpose arts centre and the home of South Australia's performing arts, was built in the 1970s. The Festival Theatre opened in June 1973 with the rest of the centre following soon afterwards. The complex includes Festival Theatre, Dunstan Playhouse, Space Theatre (formerly The Space) and several gallery and function spaces. Located approximately 50 metres (160 ft) north of the corner of North Terrace and King William Road, lying near the banks of the River Torrens and adjacent to Elder Park, it is distinguished by its two white geometric dome roofs, and lies on a 45-degree angle to the city's grid.
Adelaide Festival Centre hosts Adelaide Festival and presents major festivals across the year including Adelaide Cabaret Festival, OzAsia Festival, DreamBIG Children's Festival, Adelaide Guitar Festival and OUR MOB. It is also home to Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, State Opera South Australia, Australian Dance Theatre, State Theatre Company of South Australia, The Australian Ballet, Brink and Windmill Theatre Co.
The Festival Centre is managed by a statutory corporation, the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust, which is responsible for encouraging and facilitating artistic, cultural and performing arts activities, as well as maintaining and improving the building and facilities of the Adelaide Festival Centre complex and Her Majesty's Theatre.
The Festival Centre was erected on the site of the Adelaide City Baths, which had been there for over a century.
n 1971 the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust was established as a statutory authority by the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust Act 1971, reporting to the Minister for the Arts.
From about 1996 until late 2018, Arts SA (later Arts South Australia) had responsibility for this and several other statutory bodies such as the South Australian Museum and the Art Gallery of South Australia. Arts SA leased Her Majesty's Theatre and the Festival Centre to the Trust, which was responsible for "encouraging and facilitating artistic, cultural and performing arts activities throughout the State" and managing and maintaining the theatres.
In July 2017, the Trust bought Her Majesty's Theatre from Arts South Australia for A$8 million. It also borrowed A$62 million from the South Australian Government Financing Authority for a maximum term of 10 years to fund Her Majestyâs Theatre redevelopment.
From late 2018, the functions previously held by Arts SA were transferred to direct oversight by the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, Arts and...
Read moreWe attended this venue last night to see Frozen. All was going well until one of the employees entered our box and said another patron had seen someone taking photos from one of the boxes on our side. We assured her we had taken no photos during the musical. She apologized and left us to enjoy the show. Fast forward to the second half she entered our box again and aggressively said âIâm going to have to ask you to delete those photos youâve been takingâ. I looked at her and said as I told you before we have not taken any photos. Myself and my partner then proceeded to take out our phones and show her our camera rolls. What an absolutely total violation of privacy just to prove our innocence. Upon seeing our camera rolls with not a single photo of the show she just said I have been down below and another visitor had said they have seen photos being taken. Absolutely no apology or anything. How can your venue think it it at all appropriate to aggressively approach people and accuse them of taking photographs with absolutely no proof.? What was supposed to be an enjoyable night with our children attending their first musical, has been absolutely tarnished by inappropriate and unprofessional behavior by the staff. The amusing thing is this woman approached us twice to accuse us of something we hadnât done. However, upon entering the venue and our box not a single staff member was present to check our tickets. That is absolutely mind boggling. I am an avid musical theatre goer and not once have I ever entered a venue without showing a ticket. We could have been literally anyone and concealing any kind of weapon etc on us and no one would have known. That is so unbelievably concerning and scary. We have travelled here from perth for a family holiday and I can assure you we will not be returning to your venue should we come back here in the future. What an absolutely...
Read moreAttended the 1pm Frozen The Musical today - the show was wonderful however the staff member at Door 5 should be given a written warning after speaking to a woman & her daughter about Hot Food. 1. The way she said stop you canât eat hot food you need to leave if youâre eating hot food. For front of house there was no tact or anything of class from your staff member. 2. There were no signs anywhere about no hot food to be consumed, yet drinks with no lids & all other food could be eaten. 3. I heard the woman in front apologise & say I didnât see any signs & she had looked around & said the only reason they started eating was because she could see others eating their exact same hot food. The staff member asked where & she pointed on the same row & she said oh theyâre almost finished. Then I looked around myself and saw at least another 10 people in the area eating the same hot food & went back to her post and didnât pull up a single other person. The mother had tears streaming down her face, went out & then came back in 5 minutes later. I heard her daughter ask her Mum how many musicals she had seen before & she said this was her first one too. And Iâm sure now sheâll probably remember it for all the wrong reasons. Train your staff to have some manners & if you point out one person for doing something, point out everyone else. Singling out her...
