Excellent. I feel slightly ashamed, as a Brisbane resident, that it has taken me so long to visit the Queensland Holocaust Museum - but I was not disappointed when I finally got there. The exhibits are arranged thoughtfully and tell the story of the Holocaust, starting from its origin in the Weimar Republic in the 1920s, in a logical and accessible manner. Interspersed are audio visual accounts from Holocaust survivors which are very moving and serve to paint a vivid picture of Jewish life in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. The material presented is at no stage overwhelming or daunting - as it can be in some museums. The Virtual Reality experience of Sorella's story was a highlight - apart from the power of the subject matter it was fascinating from a technological viewpoint.
It is a really good thing that many school groups visit the museum. The story of this dark period of our recent history should be essential learning for all children to give them some context to help understand why the world is shaped the way it is today - context which is often missing from the sensationalist media reports we are constantly exposed to.
Visit soon - you won't be...
Read moreI had to go to the city for an appointment, but I decided to make the most of the trip by visiting a museum after. Google told me that the Queensland Holocaust Museum was just around the corner, so off I went.
Tucked away off the busy road, the Queensland Holocaust Museum is a true hidden gem. The staff who work here are incredibly passionate, kind and informative. I took my baby girl with me and the staff went out of their way to help me with the elevator and store my pram.
Coincidentally, the day of our visit was also the one year celebration since the Museum opened. Holocaust survivor Peter (pictured) was there. We said a brief hello to him which was a special yet humbling experience.
While the Museum itself isn't too grand in size, it packs in a lot of information, testimonials, artefacts and video content.
The tribute to the children that died in the Holocaust brought me to tears. It was truly beautiful.
While the subject of the Holocaust is frankly quite distressing, everything is presented in a tasteful and sensitive way.
I honestly think all residents of Brisbane would benefit by visiting this important time...
Read moreThe Queensland Holocaust Museum is a must see if you are visiting Brisbane's CBD. It tells the story of the persecution of the Jews and other minority groups in the lead up and during WW2. This Museum is a place dedicated to the memory of all those that perished, survived and saved many during the Holocaust. Upon entry we were given the "low down" by a super friendly volunteer on all the info that we needed for our visit. The museum is laid out is an easy follow story line with a number of Discovery Pods where videos (some very emotional) complete the story. Museum volunteers are on hand to help out with any enquirers. 👍Tip: The entry is on the ground floor, the museum on the 1st level which is a flight of stairs down to the museum. A lift is available for easier accessibility. 👍Tip: Check out the video Queensland Holocaust Museum on ROAD TRIP'N Face Book page if you are after a complete tour.
