Just had anniversary dinner with my girlfriend there tonight. On arrival, table was not ready. Directed to the bar area to get started with drinks. Ordered a mocktail and cocktail, which as per the receipt, were on the house due to the delay.
Didnโt really have a second thought about it as we werenโt in a rush, but things just went downhill from there.
We ordered the Jade Banquet (78pp) over the Dragonโs Banquet as the food items included seemed to suit our taste more. We decided to add on the Oysters with green nahm jim- $7pp, chicken bao-$10pp and the kingfish sashimi- $15pp on top of the banquet. Waitress had to clarify if we wanted one serving or not? Is it not given that it is 2 servings if it says per person?
Food arrived: ONE oyster arrived- no sauce. Enquired and they gave us another oyster- also no sauce. Had to ask for the sauce separately.
Longwang Chicken Bao- was actually quite good. A bit on the expensive side thought at $10 for one.
Kingfish Sashimi- 3 pieces on the plate. When asked, said as we were paying $15, was a smaller portion than normal and that they had given us an extra piece already.
Coconut poached chicken- evident the whole dish is pre-prepared and stored in the fridge as the chicken was cold and hard.
Pork + prawn wontons- broth was good, but wontons werenโt very well seasoned.
Crispy squid- was not actually crispy, not well seasoned. The sauce it came with was actually not bad, but the only thing that gave the dish its flavour.
Prawn curry- might be personal preference- but very strongly on the sweet side. Prawns also very evidently store bought, not fresh prawns.
Wok fried wagyu beef fillet- tasted alright, but was overcooked and very chewy.
Wok tossed Asian greens- quite oily, but was very basic.
Mango pudding- coconut sorbet was weak, lychee granita was very sour.
Had a look at the receipt after getting home and realised that the kingfish sashimi they had charged us $15pp ($30 total) and given us 3 pieces. $10 for ONE piece of kingfish sashimi??? Referred back to the menu and saw that a normal set of kingfish sashimi is with 6 pieces as per other peopleโs Google reviews and is also priced at $30.
A massive disappointment as we were very excited from all the highly rated reviews and beautiful photos. Would not recommend, would not come back. Such a shame as the location and vibes...
ย ย ย Read moreWe were so looking forward to dinning here and had high expectations from the reviews but unfortunately it was an experience we want to forget. The food and service was no where near our expectations or of a restaurant with such a high rating I'm afraid. We started to be a little suspect when dishes started turning up at our table before we had even ordered, guess they knew what we liked or the serving waitresses hadn't a clue :( After about 30-40 minutes one our our starters finally turned up, the Prawn Toast with wasabi mayo, luckily the wasabi mayo rescued the prawn toast which was quite average. Next the Kingfish Sashimi turned up looking more like Tuna Sashimi, guess they thought we wouldn't know the difference. After questioning the head waitress, she advised that they had run out of Kingfish and that's why we got tuna instead, better late than never but sent that one back but we did notice, a happy couple at the side of us did get the last kingfish sashimi served to them which was quite a surprise as they didn't think they had ordered it :) Now here's where it get's really fun, out comes the Kung Pao Bug Tail main looking very impressive, but no sign of a side of typhoon shelter fried rice that we had ordered. Questions the head waitress about the side of rice not coming out, takes the dish away and says it will be made fresh for us. Next we see the same Kung Pao Bug dish delivered to the happy couple next to us who say they don't remember ordering that, think they should have bought lottery tickets tonight :) Finally, we get the main and OMG, we must have really upset the chef as presentation has really gone out the window with a ratio of about 98% chilli / sichuan pepper and no sign of the hot + numbing sauce. The side of typhoon shelter fried rice was very bland as well which was such a shame. Felt a waste of food leaving all the chilli / sichuan pepper's but the bugs were tasty. Appreciate the main waitress trying to rescue the night with a free desert but I think it was past the point of no return! Possibly might not be going back! Unfortunately, one of the worst dinning experiences we have encountered...
ย ย ย Read moreWe booked 3 weeks in advance for dinner on Thursday at 7pm. When we arrived, they went to check, and our table wasnโt ready as they had a booking before us that overlapped with our booking, so they moved us to another table. They ushered us to our table, out the front door, out of the seated area, through the archway to the restaurant and to a table that was technically outside of their restaurant in the next door cafe (Lait Noir) area with milk crates nearby, overlooking the Victory Hotel, Stock Exchange and Winghaus. Knowing we were planning to spent hundreds of dollars between the two of us for our 11 year anniversary, we asked if there happened to be a free table inside. They said they would let us know if one opened up. After 35 minutes of waiting and no one taking our drink order or coming to check on us (probably because we werenโt even seated in the restaurant), my partner went inside to use the restroom to which they then found a table for us upstairs. We went to our new table which was SIGNIFICANTLY nicer, the atmosphere was there, and we were able to enjoy the smells of the food rather than the street. Over the night we ordered around $300 worth of food and drinks which thankfully turned around a poor start to our experience. Service was pretty slow, but staff were polite and attentive to refilling water and checking if you needed another drink. We ordered the Bao buns, calamari, poached chicken salad, massaman lamb curry, pork belly, fried rice, fried icecream and a number of cocktails. All were very yum. However, we note compared to the bao buns promoted on Instagram, they are not as big or filled (it was more like a piece or two of popcorn chicken as opposed to what they show in images). I have attached images of where we were first seated, and the bao buns compared to online advertising (which is a little disappointing to see...
