I attended a gig at the Doo Bop Bar. It was my first time. When the gig was halfway done, I was assaulted by a regular of the place. They boasted about being a regular and that there was nothing I could do. It turned out they were 100% right.
After they assaulted me, they made racist and derogatory comments to the person I was attending the gig with (an Asian woman), and then attempted to assault her too.
I, and the person I went with, were both trying to de-escalate things, so we did nothing and the regular then went off and complained about us, even though we had done nothing wrong. We were both forced to leave without seeing the gig. This was despite innocent bystanders confirming that we had done nothing wrong, and describing the regular as an "aggressive drunk".
I made a complaint, but the club did nothing, and I have not been provided with a refund, despite my request. The manager I complained about (Oliver), was the person that responded to my complaint and when I asked for someone who was not involved to handle the complaint, there was no response.
The experience of being assaulted and subjected to racist remarks by a regular of the place was scary and extremely upsetting. The response, or lack thereof, from management, made it worse.
I would not feel safe returning to the Doo Bop Bar ever again.
Think carefully before you go to this place, and be aware of your safety.
I have edited this review to respond to the owner's post.
I was assaulted by the regular. When that happened, I asked the person I was at the gig with to record the incident. There was no restriction in the club on photos or recording and the person I was with, was within her rights to record the incident.
After assaulting me, the regular then attempted to assault the person I was with, because she was recording the assault. The person that assaulted me said "your white friend is not going to protect you".
At that point, I grabbed the assailant's wrist as they lunged towards my companion to stop the assailant from attacking her.
Subsequently, Oliver, the manager, attempted to victim blame the person that I was with, by saying that she instigated the incident by recording the event. He said this despite the fact that I had already been assaulted by the regular before I asked the person I was with to record the assault.
Recording an assault that was ongoing, and recording racist abuse is not wrong. It is not a grounds for one person to assault another person. Blaming victims is not ok.
The CCTV alone shows an assault on me and an attempted assault on the person that I was with. It shows me defending my companion from a further assault.
This is all confirmed by...
Read moreUsually like to be positive when I post reviews but I would like to express an upsetting event that happened yesterday…Been to this bar a few times and it has a good atmosphere of people and live music. Unfortunately on Saturday the 30th of August I went out with my family to celebrate my sister’s 23rd birthday. We were having a good time until one of the security guards pushed and shoved her and her partner because they went into the same restroom together. We all understand that this was against the rules and take full accountability on our part. As they were both quite intoxicated my 50 year old mother went up to make sure everyone was okay but she was also pushed and shoved by just trying to discuss the situation. Also I observed that innocent bystanders got pushed and shoved by the security. This could make a lot of people very uneasy and should’ve been handled in a better manner. All of us were followed out the door, not even getting a chance to consult management about the mistreatment. Everyone was calmed down outside the venue until the security guard came right back up to our group and threatened to fight all of us including my pregnant auntie and I, an 18 year old girl. This was very scary and I was shocked how a security guard would react in that way as I have many family members in security and know that this behaviour is completely unacceptable. He even stated that “he didn’t care if he lost his job.” - this statement suggests he knew he was acting out of line to his duty. I wish I got the guys name. There were two security guards on this night and the other one who was much more civil about the situation did not make us feel unsafe at all and was actually pulling the other security guard back from us. Once we were all outside the venue, the security guard had no further authority over us. Threatening physical harm is criminal intimidation and assault - even without physical contact. Security guards are not allowed to harass or intimidate people outside the venue - This is in line with the Queensland laws. Their job ends at ensuring people leave the premises safely. It is very clear that our safety was not considered at all. The bar staff were friendly and we have never had any issues with the bar management itself and appreciate their service but this is very disappointing security service and we urge management to reevaluate their security services to further improve the overall experience for...
Read moreReally fun night! My friend and I were looking for a spot to have dinner when we stumbled upon Doo-Bop.
I love Jazz, my friend is always up for new things, and the menu looked ok. So in we went to the downstairs space ($10 or $15 cover I think).
Cool cosy space! Lighting, seating density, decor, all just right. Service seemed a little slow, it looked as though only one server was covering all the dining tables for a while, but maybe someone had called in sick for all I know so it wouldn't be fair to judge harshly on that point.
The afore mentioned server, maître d' I believe from the way he seemed to be running the show, was charming and professional. He answered easily our queries of the menu and wine list. So really the service was good, it just could have benefited from an extra body on the floor.
We ordered two entrees and two mains, and WOW excellent stuff. The food was very reasonably priced (our mains were mid $20s), and obviously the main attraction is the Jazz, so I wasn't expecting the world. Totally knocked it out of the park! The entrees were delicious, and my main (duck) was sensational, crisp skin, tender flesh, rich savoury sweet sauce... So good! My friend's lamb also looked great and he told me that he loved it. And I reiterate, mains were under $30. Outstanding value!
And finally, of course, the main attraction. The band was sizzling! Started as a quartet, became a quintet about half way, and finished up as a sextet. I'm sorry I have forgotten their name but they really did bop out some high energy fun jazz for a Friday night. Loved it.
So yeah 5 🌟 for me. I have been telling my jazz loving family and friends. I will...
