I had the absolute pleasure along with fellow members from the Carseldine Probus Club of visiting the Queensland Maritime Museum at 412 Stanley St,South Brisbane QLD 4101 Keith Boulton OAM, who is QMM Historical Walk Convener, conducts Historical Walks through the Maritime Museum and along the Brisbane River and through areas of South Bank Parklands. Keith, along with Robyn, who is a long-time volunteer, took us for a very relaxing and informative 2-hour walk explaining in detail the history of the ever changing face the Brisbane River and South Brisbane It was wonderful as Keith and Robyn took us back in time of what it was like work on Shore with the railway running in the area where the Maritime Museum is located. There was a lot of production from several flour mills that were in South Brisbane. Coal was brought by rail from areas like Ipswich, ensuring that everyone was gainfully employed. The Brisbane River was busy with shipping, taking produce to various areas along the coastline of Queensland and beyond. Our walk also took us into the South Bank Parklands, whereas we know Expo 88 was enjoyed by millions of people attending this game-changing event. It definitely put Brisbane and Queensland on the map. After the walk was completed, we then had the opportunity to board the HMAS Diamantina, a warship that is located in the dry dock in the Maritime Museum along with the lugger Penguin this vessel is also located in the same location. You definitely need time to enjoy going through HMAS Diamantina. A lot of budding sailors would get a first-time look at what people had to live with during World War 2 and beyond. A lot of time and effort has been carried out by dedicated volunteers to maintain this ship for visitors to enjoy their time walking everywhere on this warship. Another wonderful highlight is looking at Jessica Watson's yacht, the Pink Lady, Jessica is renowned for performing a major solo event over 16 years ago. The Queensland Maritime Museum is opened most days of the week except Monday and Tuesdays, and visiting hours are between 10.00 am. and 4.15 pm. I would highly recommend anyone wanting something to do when visiting South Brisbane spend time at the Queensland Maritime Museum and taking advantage of going on a historic walk with Keith Boulton or one of the dedicated volunteers.

Month of visit:  September 2024 Our first time visiting this museum, I was amazed! I didn’t have strong knowledge of the navy and ship things, so I did have to google about the HMAS Diamantina first, lol. The entrance fee was $15 for adults with concession (cmiiw). Many interesting exhibits, such as marine supplies, marine engines, navigation equipment, cabins, etc. You can also explore the HMAS Diamantina, which is located outside the museum, and it was fun, although I cannot imagine myself if I had to live in a warship during wartime – such a tough life. We met a guide in the middle of our visit, I forgot his name, but he looks like an Asian and this guy was so informative and kind. He showed us around and explained things in a very interesting way! You should try to visit this museum if you are in Brisbane especially if you are into maritime things and love history!

Amaazing place. A lot of things to see. A bit pricey though. Its $16 for an adult and $7 for child over 5 and under 13. The war ship is in its original condition with many old mattresses, ropes still intact and kept inside. As the ship is not restored or preserved, it looks like its parked in the junk yard rather than in the museum. It should be maintained or atleast be painted to take off the rust and make it more appealing to the crowd. All being said, I still liked the overall experience as we could see many small chambers in their original shape. I have never seen the anchor room before and was amazed to see the width and length of the rope. The museum at back had lots of items to explore. PS: the ship is all metal and being on sunny side of Brisbane river it gets heated up fast. There are couple of pedestal fans but they can only do as much.
