Amazing campus located smack in the center of Brisbane City! It looks kinda small on a map, but the twists and turns between buildings make it feel much larger than it actually is. I felt very safe here as an international student living far from home for the first time, though the whole place gets kinda dead past 6pm, and especially dead on weekends and public holidays.
In my experience, the students were generally quite approachable and friendly, though I think it might depend on your luck and who you mix with. I didn't get a "party school" vibe from here. Instead felt a more "down-to-earth" vibe, students here generally seemed to be more on the introverted side, though of course it doesn't apply to everyone.
Food options are quite limited and some don't taste great (prices are mostly around the $10+ range for a single meal), though there are plenty more options in the CBD a couple hundred meters walk out. I recommend K Garden on campus if you're looking for something good in school. Tastes great and prices/portions are reasonable! My favorite place on campus is the "Kidney Lawn". Perfect place to sit and relax on the grass and enjoy the blue sky that Brisbane frequently experiences.
In case you're thirsty, refilling stations are scattered everywhere on campus so you could fill up on the go. There are lots of student discounts and free stuff from time to time for students to take advantage of. I also love the contrast between the older and newer blocks here, like the Old Government House and futuristic P Block.
There are lots of student services available such as accommodation, counseling, financial assistance, a health center, and more. Everything (including the doctor's consultation) is free and accessible to all. Though you will have to pay out of pocket for medication if the doctor prescribes any, which you can get from Priceline Pharmacy in P Block a short walk away.
There's also a swimming pool, gym, e-sports arena, basketball courts, and other sports facilities, but I'm unsure whether a fee is required to use them.
Also, the Botanic Gardens that is directly connected to the school is incredible. Awesome place to just hang around and relax with your friends before or after class. It's beautiful in the spring when the flowers...
Read morePros: Nice campus, nice location, mostly friendly students/peers, exceptional scholarship schemes, some staff genuinely care about student performance and wellbeing. Once established disability services will chase up your electronic books early, some staff in disability services are passionate about equity.
Cons: Disability services processes were clunky, and their exam adjustments rarely met the arrangements outlined in the support plan (really big problem) and it lacked a fully functional complaints process. Some academics are good, but most were average in business/economics/finance. Some lecturers were incredibly hard to understand and suffered significant language barriers. Data Analysis subject had a tutor that preprepared a MS Word sheet set it up on the projector then just dictated the answers, not really getting into the subject material or theories, another tutor for the same subject was professional and applied the theory the whole way through, which demonstrates the varied nature of quality in teaching at QUT. Investments subject I had to find a new tutorial to secure a group as limited students in my class spoke fluent English, which was a reoccurring issue (there was a presentation component...
Read moreYou will be nothing more than a number at QUT – just a tick and flick on a piece of paper. Ideas and learning don't matter, just as long as you memorise your text books. Lecturers in the School of Nursing are short and dismissive (across multiple years and subjects) – they do not care about you or your studies. Emails are left unanswered as academic "professionals" hide in their giant offices surrounded by glass cabinets filled with fine art.
The complaints process is handled within QUT before an external provider can be involved. Rest assured that every email and phone call to QUT will be ignored for weeks on end until you decide you can no longer be bothered to follow up. Persist and escalate every complaint to TEQSA and the Queensland Ombudsman, because I can promise you you will not find the help you need by contacting the shills working for this university.
For any students considering studying nursing at QUT: DON'T. Instead, go to TAFE and complete your Enrolled Nurse certificate. You will have FAR more employment options in hospitals Australia-wide, and the pay difference is not significant. Choose a different university if you want to...
