I have an extreme soft spot in my heart for The Sound of Music. My grandmother loved that movie so much. I have always been told, by my grandmother and mother, that you can’t even breach the gate so imagine how excited I was that not only could I breach the gate but I could peak inside the church.

Not only are you able to see where some of the exterior movie shots were taken you’re able to actually go inside where the real Maria and Captain Von Trapp were married.

They don’t charge a fee but there is a place to leave a donation and take a candle. The church was described as too “simple”to film the wedding scene at on the Sound of Music tour but I disagree with Hollywood. This abbey/ church is beautiful. The inside was gorgeous- It’s peaceful and perfect. Please, be respectful as you enter- it’s still a working abbey and I would hate for them to be so annoyed they lock the gates.

This is worth the hike and it’s worth the hype. The views of the mountains are stunning and my only wish is that I could have seen the entire abbey and spoke with the nuns about their day...

Stift Nonnberg (Nonnberg Abbey) is a Benedictine convent located in Salzburg, Austria. It is one of the oldest continuously existing monasteries in the world, founded in 712 AD by St. Rupert, the patron saint of Salzburg. The abbey holds significant historical and cultural value, with its prominent Gothic architecture, richly adorned altars, and frescoes.

Ornate wooden entrance, interior nave with pointed Gothic arches, colorful stained glass windows, and a detailed altar. The exterior showcases the abbey’s serene garden area and its setting near the mountains, adding to its...

You are here to take photos outside of this ancient convent. You can't get in. A certain Von Trapp wedding took place here (for real it did) . Make sure you've had your weetabix as it's a steep hill to negotiate. Vertigo inducing heights over the town, but terrific views to be had. Informative bilingual signs explain the unique geology. Get a photo by that famous entrance. Then get back to the main tourist amenities in the town. Another tick on that sound of music tour list. If that's not why you've come here, I'm not sure you'll rate...

It's hard to rate places like this as opinion is so subjective! None of us are religious or fans of TSOM. I love architecture and old religious architecture is usually spectacular, so I personally enjoyed looking around the place. My husband has no interest so didnt go inside, the 2 teenage kids came in so they didnt feel like they were missing something I think. We all enjoyed the walk up the meandering stairs to the convent and the view over the Dome area of Salzburg. It's worth going up there even if its just for the view.

Nonnberg Abbey is in fact the oldest nunnery in German-speaking countries that is still working coninously since its construction in 714. It is a catholic church of romanesque and gothic style. The abbey became popular through movies based on Maria Augusta Kutschera life, who became a postulant in the abbey in early 20th century, including The Sound of Music. For me it was fascinating to climb there and enjoy the picturesque view and peaceful, soothing silence of the church and surrounding.
