This is a review of the restaurant, not the hotel. I was introduced to Gasthaus Hinterbrühl in 1971 when I was a participant in the first semester of a study program sponsored by Illinois State University and Northern Illinois University, a program that became Salzburg College. I have dined at Gasthaus Hinterbrühl every time I have returned to Salzburg since then. In the past five days I have had dinner here twice. The first time I ordered Schweinshax'n with Knödel and cabbage salad: the knuckle was wonderfully cooked: moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. DELICIOUS! The second time I ordered Wiener Schnitzel (veal), and it was amazing: the breading was light, yet crisp, and the veal was still juicy and tender. It is usually served with warm potato salad, but I asked for a substitution of red cabbage (which they call blue cabbage) YUMMY! It's the best of all of the Schnitzels I've eaten on this trip. In addition to delicious food, you will be hosted by two knowledgeable, charming, and jovial owners: siblings Alex and Verena; the expert chef is Verena's husband Dennis (who used to work at Kloster Andechs near Munich). They have kept the menu small but interesting. Try the appetizers or desserts too; you will be delighted with their taste and artistry. Make your way to Gasthaus Hinterbrühl at Schanzlgasse 12; you'll be glad you did.

We did not stay at the hotel, so I cannot tell anything about the hotel. We went to this restaurant and atmosphere was truly delicious! We really enjoyed our dinner and our evening! The atmosphere was great, the service was quick and friendly! The food was delicious! My favourite part was cream soup from white asparagus - it was amazing! I believe they change menu quite often and most probably it is a seasonal dish! Truffle dippers - potatoes - was also good, but I believe it is deep fried potatoes, so next time I would try something else. For the main we took 2 meats: I may be wrong with exact name of the dishes: beef knuckle and grilled beef with onions and mash potatoes. I personally liked more grilled beef loin, but we enjoyed both of the dishes!!! Thank you for the hospitality and tasty food!

This is undoubtedly one the finest and friendliest restaurants we go too in Europe. We travel back and forth from Croatia to UK every year, and we purposely stop in Salzburg to come here. The family run business is in a great location, small and cosy atmosphere, with amazing food and wine dishes and pleasent music in the background. Verena and her brother Alex are the best hosts, the other front of house staff are extremely polite and the chefs are clearly superb. Our go to off the menu, is their famous pork knuckle and Weiner schnizel dishes. Josanna grand curvee red is to die for, we love it enough to buy cases of it on our way home. Don't listen to the few brutish reviews, if you are down to earth, friendly and enjoy a good feed, don't look any further. See you in January '24 on our way back!

This place is reachable by bus (a few stops away) from the main train station. I booked the double room with shared bathroom. Both room and shared bathroom are clean and towels are provided. There is no lift in the building. There is no aircon but it feels ok as we left the window opened. Check-in is only till 8pm, which might be an issue if you are arriving late, or had a flight delay. I text the accomodation that I will be arriving late as my flight was delayed at the last minute. Someone waited for me till 9pm. As mentioned by other reviewers, most attractions are within walking distance. When we checked out, we checked with the lady who is cleaning up the rooms if we can leave the luggage with them for half a day and she allowed us to leave them inside till 12noon. Our room was on the 3rd floor and it was slightly noisy on a Friday night. Overall, it was a good place to stay for the price. No comment for the restaurant as I did...
