As a small-town boy from India with a love for history, visiting Fortress Hohensalzburg was an awe-inspiring experience. Situated majestically atop the hills overlooking Salzburg, Austria, the fortress exudes a sense of grandeur and history from the moment you lay eyes on it.
Upon purchasing my ticket for 11 euros, I was excited to explore every nook and cranny of this imposing structure. The ticket price felt reasonable considering the wealth of history and cultural significance contained within the fortress walls. .

Read moreThe fortress is so interesting. Seeing the history of the place and amazing views is such a treat and the tickets are decently priced (around 11 euros). My only gripe is 90% of the exhibits are in German only, which meant most of the things we looked at we couldn’t learn about. Seems odd because there are large signs in a multitude of languages and then some small info cards had English and Italian? Seems quite odd given it’s such a huge attraction. The bits that were in English were pretty half baked. Not a lot of info or a lot of "we don't know" which seems a little lazy research wise. The armoury was huge, yet one large exhibit wasn't working and it seems overall a bit of a rip as it seems like a learning centre for kids. There were also many exhibits that were caked in dust. I can't help but feel little to no care went into preserving the place.
Got to be honest that walk up is BRUTAL and lethal in the aftermath of snow. The funicular was out of service which was beyond frustrating…I’ve never known somewhere to have so many stairs once we got inside and my knees are not thanking me! The furnicular being off was pretty frustrating and while I'd understand the need for maintenance, on a Thursday, during peak ski season seems a little mad to me. Why not a Monday/Tuesday or after the castle has shut....it shuts pretty early afterall. It also wasn't annouced before we left for Austria (14th Jan) so it seemed a little last minute.
You don’t have to book in advance and the staff on the phone are very friendly. The staff in the fortress weren't friendly at all and actually didn't seem to speak to visitors at all. Do bring cash for the restaurants as the Tavern annouced they only took cash (they did have a machine) which would be a bugger if you got to the top of that hill with no cash! there should be drinking fountains at least, as I and others were struggling with the hill.
I do think its a tourist trap, so bare this in mind before you do...
