The Albertina modern is a museum of contemporary art that opened as the second location of the Vienna Albertina on 27 May 2020 in the Künstlerhaus Wien. With over 60,000 works by 5,000 artists, it is one of the major museums for contemporary art.

The entrepreneur Hans Peter Haselsteiner and the general director of the Albertina Klaus Albrecht Schröder set themselves the common goal of permanently preserving the Essl Collection and relocating it from Lower Austria to the Austrian federal capital Vienna. Together with the Essl family, they agreed to found a separate museum for modern art under the leadership of the Albertina after merging the Essl Collection with the Albertina's contemporary art collections. This plan was supported from the outset by the respective ministers of culture, Josef Ostermayer, Thomas Drozda, Gernot Blümel and Alexander Schallenberg, who endorsed the founding of the Albertina's second location.

The Künstlerhaus on Karlsplatz in Vienna, in which Hans Peter Haselsteiner had acquired a majority stake in 2016, was won as the location for the museum. By establishing the Künstlerhaus Besitz- und Betriebsgesellschaft, the latter undertook to renovate the association's formerly magnificent exhibition house and modernise it according to the Albertina's museological specifications. Thus, this architectural masterpiece of historicism became the home of the museum on an area of over 2,000 m² on the ground floor and basement of the building. The upper floor is used by the Künstlerhaus association, Gesellschaft bildender Künstler...

THE BEAUTY OF DIVERSITY DIE Ausstellung hält absolut, was ihr Titel verspricht...DIVERSITY....Vielfalt, auf allen Ebenen, in vielen Kunstformen, in Farben, Formen, Geweben...einfach berauschende Vielfalt.

When it comes to contemporary art in Vienna, this museum stands out as the best in my opinion. I had the pleasure of attending two captivating exhibitions: "Andy Warhol to Damien Hirst - The Revolution in Printmaking" and "Yoshitomo Nara - All My Little Words."

Beyond my personal preferences for the artists, I was particularly impressed with the museum's organization. The layout of the art pieces in the rooms was well thought out, allowing for a seamless and engaging experience. Additionally, the presence of ample captions accompanying the exhibits was a thoughtful touch. These captions catered to all visitors, even those who may not be as passionate about the subject matter. As someone less versed in contemporary art, I found it extremely helpful in understanding and enjoying the exhibitions to the fullest.

Overall, the museum offers a fantastic journey through the world of contemporary art, and its attention to organization and accessibility truly sets it apart from other Viennese art establishments. Whether you're an art enthusiast or just starting to explore the realm of contemporary art, this museum is definitely...

I had quite high expectations for my visit to the Albertina Museum, but my feelings are mixed. I was under the impression that I’d get to see works by Kiefer, Warhol and Lichtenstein — only to find out during my visit that, although the museum does own pieces by these artists, they weren’t on display at the time. Instead, I came across an exhibition mainly featuring artists from Germany (Beuys, Richter, Polke, Grosse). It’s surprising that when researching the museum online, there’s no clear note mentioning that the biggest names in contemporary art history are shown only occasionally. It’s definitely worth knowing that the exhibitions here are temporary, so it’s a good idea to check ahead and see what’s currently on display to avoid potential disappointment. That said, the museum itself is a beautiful place to visit. The grand entrance hall and impressive staircase are truly stunning and worth seeing in their own right. On the positive side, the staff were absolutely lovely and welcoming, and I did appreciate the opportunity to see an exhibition by the ever-provocative Damien Hirst.

I waited so long for this museum to open, during my last visit to Vienna it was not, and I was delightfully surprised at how well though out and purposefully curated the exhibition spaces were, not to mention the high emphasis on women artists, also called artists. Great impressions, even unforgettable. Museum counter staff were lovely, kind and friendly- helped me get a discount which I really appreciated. There was an entire floor space dedicated to a beautifully carved mahogany statue of an orangutan, you don't need to read anything to comprehend the importance of that, I beleive. There was also an exhibition with dolls/ plastic women watching chippendale's strip show, hilarious, and from the perspective of the stripper, not to mention the Maria Lassing paintings. There's a great mix of humour and afterthought here too. Excellent experience overall.

You wouldn’t expect from a generously funded public institution to be a hotspot of neoliberal capitalism. However the pricing of the tickets proves otherwise: the student ticket is 13,90 Euro (in 2024). This is 2 Euro reduction from the full price. According to Albertina Modern there is a 13% income gap between students and non-students? Also the fact that the student ticket is only available for visitors under the age of 25 means that for most phd students the museum is not accessible for a reduced price. The ticketing policy also doesn’t take into account the principles of lifelong learning and the precarious situation of cultural workers and art students. Albertina is amplifying the idea that modern art is a privilege accessible to the global elite, instead of working against it.
