The Café Imperial is adjunct to the Hotel Imperial, this famous Viennese Hotel located on the Ring Road and have been awarded several years “best hotel in the world”. The Café Imperial you either approach from the pompous lobby or directly through a separate entry. Either way leads you to this luxurious café full of elegant ambiance of the old days.
The Austrian-Hungarian Empire, though 100 years ago, is very sensible here in this café. The waiters give you all the time you need to make your choice and to choose from the menu the dish you like. If you want to relax and take a time out from busy city life, this place is the right place, easy to reach and the waiters give you all the time you need for whatever reason you decided to come to the Café Imperial, may it be reading a variety of newspapers, chatting with friends, working on your device, or simply being in awe while admiring the splendor this café bears.
However, we took a Kleiner Brauner coffee, this popular Austrian coffee, together with a “Rehrücken” an Austrian chocolate tart, similar to the Sacher Tart (Sachertorte). Here at the Café Imperial you get a very fine variant version of the “Rehrücken” Chocolate Tart, meaning saucy and fluffy, and as usual with almond sticks adjusted along the top of the chocolate tart. Very delicious!
By the way the word “Rehrücken” consists of two German words: “Reh” (deer) and “Rücken” (back). So literally “Rehrücken” means “Deer’s Back”. Figuratively the chocolate tart represents the black (chocolate) back of a deer, and the white almond sticks inserted along the chocolate surface represent the white spots on the deer’s back.

Read moreWe were lucky enough to visit Vienna over Christmas 2022. On Christmas Day we decided to have lunch at The Imperial Hotel, in the center of Vienna. The menu which was published was lovely and included everything we wanted. One of our party is vegetarian, so we contacted the hotel to make sure they would have a choice for them, we also visited the hotel to confirm the menu for Christmas day. Unfortunately when we arrived, they gave us a completely different menu and this had no vegetarian options. The waiters did agree to provide something... This was spinach dumplings, these were awful, solid lumps of cold dough with some spinach in them, surrounded by potato soup. When we said to the waiter how poor our dinner was, he just shrugged his shoulders. The service itself was also awful, the waiters would take the plates and stack on their arm, in the same manor as silver service, but would reach across the table, showing us no manors whatsoever!!! I did in fact stop the waiter and said, we do know how you are supposed to serve us, please do not treat your tourists so poorly. It was honestly like a less than funny Faulty Towers... We had to laugh as otherwise the day would been spoilt by these idiots. Please, do go to Vienna, this is a wonderful and beautiful city with much to offer, including amazing restaurants, but give this arrogant hotel with its unworthy staff a huge...
Read moreThe Imperial Cafe, is a sophisticated, resplendent dining experience that stands as a testament to timeless elegance. The cafe is steeped in history, a sentiment echoed by its refined decor, adorned with paintings and photographs that reminisce of its illustrious past and prestigious patrons.
The cafe brilliantly captures the essence of royal opulence. Its ambiance, reminiscent of a bygone era, is beautifully complemented by the strains of classical music that fill the room in the afternoon. This gentle melody, twined with the cafe's quiet splendor, creates a magical setting that transcends the ordinary.
Beyond the wide variety of beverages, the delectable small snacks offered alongside enrich the dining experience. Whether for a business meeting or a romantic date, the atmosphere is perfect for intimate conversations and meaningful exchanges.
However, there's one area where the Imperial Cafe could definitely improve, and that's the staff's approach to hospitality. While not unfriendly, they sometimes come across as less warm than you might expect in such an inviting setting. A little more friendliness and attentiveness could elevate the overall dining experience from great to...
