The Fire Brigade Museum in Vienna has a long tradition. It was founded in 1901.
In 1901, the city of Vienna Fire Department participated in an international firefighting exhibition in Berlin. The costs for the participation in this exhibition were only granted with the condition that the exhibits have to be shown afterwards in Vienna. This is how the Vienna Fire Brigade Museum came into being.
The international exhibition in Berlin met with great interest. At the meeting of the judges on 4 August 1901, the first prize was awarded to the professional fire brigade Vienna. It was a gold medal with the portrait of Empress Auguste Victoria.
Through this show shown in Berlin, the professional fire department Vienna achieved world renown. This was reinforced in the 20th century by further developments in extinguishing technology and in the equipment sector.
The Vienna Fire Brigade Museum is located in the 1st district, in the house Am Hof 7, which is also called Märkleinsches house. It was built between 1727 and 1730 according to a design by Lukas von Hildebrandt. The exhibition rooms are located on the first floor, including a large hall with an impressive stucco ceiling from the first half of the 18th century.
After several relocations within the Central Fire Station and the turmoil of the two World Wars, some of the collected items were lost or damaged. In recent years, however, numerous objects have been restored and the collection has been supplemented by the acquisition of new objects.
Showrooms: from wooden box syringes to high-tech equipment In the course of the general refurbishment of the buildings Am Hof, the rooms of the museum were also renovated, the space was increased and a barrier-free access was created.
