There are 3 aspects to this attraction and 2 are worth the ticket price.
The Historium VR attraction sits you in a pretend boat with a VR headset. The graphics on the VR headset are pretty darn good. Even during the "flying" portion I did not get ill. I wear readers but took them off to put on the headset and could still see everything crisply. There was not latency when I turned around in the headset and the images never pixelated.
The story inside the headset gives a pretty good overview of the history of the city of Bruge and immersively shows you the city how it used to look when it was the richest city in Europe.
The Historium Story is a walk through experience which uses sets and movie screens to give you a look at everyday Bruge back in the day. The story part is some silly made up romance adventure featuring an assistant of a famous Flemish painter. The sets you walk through are like the sets you walk through at Disneyland for Pirates of the Caribbean but with fewer animitronics. And the integrated movies are rich in production value though the "acting" is so so.
Again, the story experience is a good way to get a look at historic Bruge. You walk through the story experience with a headset. If there is a way for disabled people to do this experience that was really not made clear. I would not even do this experience with an older person who had a walker or cane.
The story experience empties out into a exhibit which also gives good information on the history of Bruge. The exhibit is actually why Historium is worth going to first on your visit to Bruges. Because it gives you information on the other historical sites in the city center you may wish to visit. It's an informative primer.
I would not recommend climbing the tower. The view IS good right over Grand Place/Market Square. But of the three towers it is the shortest. If you are gonna pay to climb a tower spend your money at the Belfort tower to climb...
Read moreHistorium Brugge was such a fun experience and a highlight of our visit to Bruges! It’s right on the Markt (main square), so it’s super easy to find and makes a great stop between other sights. They offer a few different packages, and we chose the one that included both the Story and the VR experience. The VR part was one of the better virtual reality experiences we have tried.
The storytelling experience takes you through a fictional tale set in 15th-century Bruges. You walk through beautifully designed rooms that recreate the atmosphere of that era, with clever effects and great attention to detail. The story itself is lighthearted, which we appreciated—when you’re traveling, you don’t necessarily want heavy drama! I won’t give away any spoilers, but the way each room is set up and transitions into the next was impressive. We especially liked the special effects in a couple of the rooms.
The staff were all very friendly, and the whole place was clean, well organized, and easy to navigate. The visit took about an hour, which was perfect. There’s also a lovely beer hall with a balcony that overlooks the main square—a perfect spot to relax after your visit.
All in all, Historium Brugge is a great experience—family-friendly, beautifully designed, and absolutely worth trying if you’re...
Read moreGreat interactive/immersive museum. We went on a rainy day in Bruges so it was quite busy and had a few school groups there that were quite loud and frantic. However, all round this is a great museum. We started with the virtual reality experience which was really good. If you're really scared of heights then I'd maybe give this a miss. We then went through the historium experience. You get headphones in your language and you go through 15th century Bruges following the story of apprentice of Jan Van Eyke the painter. The sets are excellent and each room/area is different. You really get a sense of the atmosphere. Afterwards we visited the bar with the terrace overlooking the Markt. The beer here is good and the snacks went down well. As it was raining it was a lovely way to spend a couple of hours. I have given only 4 stars purely because the only toilets available are downstairs by the main entrance and you have to pay 70 cents. I think for bar customers there should be some free...
