I rarely write negative reviews, but my experience at De Garre was truly unacceptable. I visited with a friend to sample some Belgian beers but decided to leave after quickly finishing my first drink. My friend asked for a non-alcoholic beer option and was met with "we don't play that game" and "non-alcoholic beer doesn't taste good". Non-alcoholic options are becoming more common, and any establishment worth its salt should cater to all types of customers without judgment. A simple "No, sorry we don't carry anything non-alcoholic" would have been a fine response. We may have stayed longer if we had been met with an ounce of respect. Sadly, De Garre fell short in this regard. The rudeness and lack of professionalism from the staff overshadowed what could have been a great experience in a historic location.

I won’t be returning and cannot recommend this place to anyone who values respectful, inclusive service. If you're looking for a place that respects its patrons, try "Bourgogne Des Flandres". When we asked about non-alcoholic options they recommended us options and added "it...

If you have kids, for god’s sake find another bar !!! My husband firstly arrived with our daughter and her stroller. The barman didn’t want them to came in because of the stroller after négociations they finally had a table … I’ve arrived a few minutes later with 2 waffles to join m’y family. The barman who was drunk for sure, yellled at me to go outside, that food was not allowed … (well sir, know that you can say those things nicely) So I tried to explain him that my family was waiting for me, and that at least he could let me go upstairs and find them. He agreed then a second waiter came, yelled at me too, so i explained a second time that i was just trying to find my husband to go outside. The waiter laughed at me and say : oh you are here with the baby and the stroller ! It is not a kids bar here … I found my husband, and as we were going down the stairs the second waiter was coming upstairs with an order and almost pushed our daughter in the stairs !!! we went out this unfriendly place and far away of that crappy staff ! Hopefully, we found the bar...

I think 3 stars might be more fair for the overall experience, but I’m giving 4 stars because the beers are honestly some of the best around. That said, the service was a bit rushed — the lady wasn’t very patient and kept pushing us to make quick decisions. As for the food, I’d definitely recommend skipping it. It’s way too expensive for the really cheap quality you get. We ordered two ham and cheese toasties for €9 each, and they looked like they were bought from the cheapest supermarket. The cheese bites that come with the beers are also pretty poor quality compared to the great Belgian cheeses. One thing I noticed is that although the prices are clear, you don’t really know the size of the beers, which makes me think it’s kept hidden on purpose. Overall, the beers are great, but the food and service could definitely be improved

If only I could put a laughing emoji to their...

Difficult to find as it's down a narrow alleyway off the main street with no sign. I think this helps to filter out all but the most thirsty of bier connoisseurs. It's cramped and uneven and full of charm just as you woukd expect somewhere so old. Not sure if it's always been a bar but it's not hard to imagine the locals having a good old fashioned 16th century session in here. The beer list is immense, can't give a quantitative description but i'm talking 3 or 4 pages of 20 beers on each. There are only about 5 on draught one of which is the house brew which I would recommend. You even get a petri dish of Edame cheese with each order. Forget cheese and wine, this is beer and wine. Pictured are the house beer (foreground), guest cheery beer and mini cheese bowl.

This is definitely hidden into the old walls of the town. A medieval tavern with three storeys hidden in an alleyway close to the grand square. They have a huge selection of beers but would recommend the house beer. The house beer is strong so go slow. They also have a sign saying they do not offer more than three strong beers per person. Beer is offered with young Belgian cheese which pairs almost perfectly. In addition to the cheese, you can order meat platter that comes with pickles. The service is quick, the tables are always occupied. Come early if you’re a big group. If you’re a small group you can share the table with someone else also. Donot miss this place if you’re in Brugge. 100% recommended

The beer is amazing here and really fair priced. I've been here a few times and not had a bad word to say until... I went with my wife and got told there was no space, very dismissively, by a member of staff. I asked if we should try later and was told we could try. A couple offered to share a table with us so we were able to sit down. We later moved upstairs and witnessed this member of staff do it again, turning away customers when there were free tables upstairs. If you go and they say there is no space, say that you will wait inside until a table becomes available, or go for a look upstairs yourself. The beer and the atmosphere is worth the wait.
