After 4 years of growing his hair out, my boyfriend decided to change up his hair. It was a big decision, and we were both hesitant as he’s never gotten it cut in the style/shape that he’s asked for in the past. After researching many different salons and stylists, he decided to book an appointment with Mai as she had done many men’s cuts based on her Instagram page.
However, the end result was awful. I literally cried in the front lobby seeing what she had done to his hair. It was nothing like the reference photos he had brought in and asked for, frankly it was the complete opposite in every way imaginable.
He had asked for length in the front so that it could be pushed forward and spill down over his forehead. While he wanted the sides shorter, he did NOT ask for a fade, yet she gave him a very extreme fade anyway. Halfway through the appointment, he asked if she wanted to see the reference photos again but she said no. Eventually, he told her to STOP taking any more length off the top and front but she kept cutting it shorter regardless. He also reminded her to pull the hair forward over his forehead, but she completely ignored his request and glued it pushed back instead.
We were both looking for something fun and playful but he left with a very boring, sterile cut that was nearly a buzz cut if it was any shorter. It wasn’t what he asked for and didn’t suit his face shape at all. I deeply regret that we didn’t speak up as we paid and left, but I think we were both shocked about how bad the final result was.
Luckily, hair grows back but it is sad to see long hair with so much potential just be completely shorn away. It will take many months to get it back to a somewhat workable length. I expected better from a salon downtown, but if I could give 0...
Read moreI have been going for years and absolutely love my colourist (Rio) and stylist (Vicky) - but ... I'm really torn and will not give a good rating to the salon, as I was told last time I had to dry my own hair (or leave with wet hair...) Turns out that if you want to leave with dry hair after a colour appointment, you need to schedule another appointment for a blow out in advance (at extra cost of course). Otherwise they may not have anyone available to dry your hair and you'll have to do it yourself. In the middle of the salon. Literally standing in the way of people walking back and forth. I felt embarrassed having to do that. So I just dried my hair super quickly, and got out of there as fast as I could.
Update based on Suki's reply: thanks for responding but this was definitely not my first time at the salon, you may assume this because I changed my last name recently, but the staff colouring and cutting my hair have known me for years. You are correct that no one has ever explained your policy to me, I assumed it was a recent change. Thank you for clarifying. Your response is basically acknowleging what I wrote in my review: you either book a blow out appointment at an extra charge or there is a high chance you will be drying your own hair. It is absolutely fine to have this policy, but it is a rare thing and most unexpected at a salon. So the review is to let others know that this is the case so they can adjust their expectations, as I will as well now that I know too (I've cut out most of the...
Read moreMai Nguyen was such a gifted and helpful hairdresser who gave me a hair-cut, hair wash and styling. Her warm welcome and professional manner towards her customers definitely stay in their hearts. Mai also made efforts to entertain (by talking) her customer (me) while taking care of my hair. During the process, Mai was very determined to make my hair look right after leaving the salon. Mai was very focused, precise (she would fix the position of my head whenever I got tired of keeping it straight) and well timed. My hair was long, thick and naturally curly but Mai was able to handle it (precisely trimmed my hair from the back of my neck to make the guideline for its other parts on top). Mai really knows how to use the available tools + hair care products so that my hair can appear with the best texture (strongly-curved + shiny). Her instructor at the salon also played a crucial role in renewing my look - she advised Mai with the right style for my hair + face and also came to help drying my hair in the end. After the appointment was done, Mai also recommended specific hair products for myself and where to get them for reasonable price, which I really appreciated. The clinic was clean and was following the social distancing practice pretty well. Mai's co-workers were also helpful in recommending products for my hair, cheering me up or cleaning hair on the ground. Everyone there made my experience at Suki's Salons unforgettable. Thank...
