National Security Exhibition Gallery, Hong Kong Museum of History — Attraction in Hong Kong

A deeply disappointing and frankly insulting exhibition.

This so-called “Five Years of National Security Law” display at the Hong Kong History Museum isn’t history — it’s recent political propaganda masquerading as a museum exhibit. Five years isn’t history; it’s current affairs, and this has no place in a history museum.

From the start, the experience is jarring and manipulative. You ascend an escalator to dark, ominous music, broken glass sounds, and dates like 2014 and 2019 plastered on the walls — key moments of protest in Hong Kong’s struggle for democracy — as if these were eras of terror rather than public outcry. It’s a heavy-handed attempt to rewrite recent memory, framing the imposition of the national security law as salvation from chaos.

Wall after wall is filled with dry party-speak and Communist Party directives, offering no meaningful historical analysis or reflection. It’s not engaging, it’s not educational — it’s just tiresome and insulting. This exhibit does a disservice to the museum’s reputation and to Hong Kong’s rich, complex history.
