"A fish never discovers its need for water until it is no longer in it" These words, from Frans Trompenaars, rang in my ears as I walked around Kongens Have on an overcast but mild Sunday afternoon. Partly this was because my brother said them, but I also like to think a powerful metaphor can be drawn here. There are some fish in the waters which create the boundary between Rosenborg Slot and Kongens Have. On this afternoon they were attempting to extricate themselves from said water in a manner I can only describe as akin to a cultlike group suicide pact. This was caused I believe by their desire to be fed by the onlooking tourists. I had no food with me so just splashed their exposed backs with the water a bit. To me, this whole situation smacked of something larger. Parallels can be drawn between these bold fish seeking sustenance from beyond the murky depths, and the Danes which populate the surrounding streets of Copenhagen. Denmark has a famously insular society. Suspicion and awareness of outsiders are taught at a young age, and the cultural, political, and legal systems of the country do not make it easy for internationals living in the country to integrate. Copenhagen, however, has seen a boom in tourism in recent years. Overnight stays from international tourists increased 87% in the years between 2012-2019. This, combined with the number of migrants who call the city their home, has changed the feel of the Danish capital immeasurably. Danes who choose to live in Copenhagen are doing so in spite of their own reservations and fears at the ebb, change, and potential loss of their own nation’s culture. One could say they are just like the fish in Kongens Have, seeking to emerge from their water but not fully understanding how. Rest of the park is quite nice too - there’s some good trees and statues and stuff.

I recently spent a delightful afternoon at the King's Garden (Kongens Have) in Copenhagen, and it was a truly enchanting experience. As the oldest and most visited park in the city, the King's Garden offers a perfect blend of history, beauty, and tranquility.

The garden is impeccably maintained, with beautifully manicured lawns, vibrant flower beds, and majestic trees that provide ample shade on sunny days. Walking through the garden, I was struck by the peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing picnic.

One of the standout features of the King's Garden is the stunning Rosenborg Castle, which sits majestically within the park. The castle’s fairy-tale appearance adds a touch of magic to the surroundings, and the gardens offer several picturesque viewpoints to admire its architecture.

The garden also boasts charming sculptures and fountains that enhance its aesthetic appeal. The Hercules Pavilion and the lovely tree-lined avenues are perfect spots for photography enthusiasts. Additionally, the garden’s layout is very visitor-friendly, with well-marked paths and plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the view.

For families, the King's Garden offers a great play area for children, ensuring that visitors of all ages can enjoy their time here. It’s also a popular spot for locals, providing a glimpse into the everyday life of Copenhagen residents as they enjoy outdoor activities and social gatherings.

Overall, the King's Garden in Copenhagen is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the serene beauty and historical charm of the city. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, this garden is sure to leave a...
