We visited Tallinn for just one day while on a cruise, and Fat Margaret (Paks Margareeta) was our very first stop — and what a great way to kick off our visit! It’s located just a short and easy walk from the cruise port, making it the ideal starting point for anyone arriving by ship.

The building itself is impressive — a massive, round tower that once served as part of the city's sea gate defenses. As you approach it, the structure immediately captures your attention with its size and character. Inside, it houses part of the Estonian Maritime Museum, which was a pleasant surprise. The exhibits are well-organized, informative, and beautifully displayed. From old ship models and navigation tools to full-scale vessels and interactive displays, there’s something for everyone — history buffs, kids, and casual visitors alike.

One of the highlights of our visit was climbing to the rooftop for the panoramic views of Tallinn’s Old Town and the harbor. Absolutely worth the few flights of stairs! The contrast between the medieval stone structure and the modern ships in the harbor below really gives you a sense of how far this city has come over the centuries.

We spent about an hour and a half exploring the tower, which left us plenty of time to enjoy other parts of Tallinn. If you’re in town for a short visit, especially by cruise, don’t skip this spot. It’s a great introduction to the city’s rich maritime and architectural history, and being so close to the port makes it super convenient.

Highly recommend as a first...

This was our first visit to Tallinn. We were on a cruise in the Baltic Sea and Tallinn was one of the stops. We spent the day on our self guided walking tour and were able to see most of the famous historic sites. When we first found Fat Margaret, we were a little surprised that it was rather short. Thought it would be a bit taller. Built in the 1500s . Very unique round design. Very nice to see. One of the most popular spots to take pictures....
