St. Catherine's Church

We recently passed by St. Catherine's Church (Katharinenkirche) located at Hauptwache and Roßmarkt and enjoyed our brief visit.

The church is dedicated to 4th-century Martyre Catherine of Alexandria and has a history dating back to the 14th-century. Originally a Catholic church until the Reformation Period, St. Catherine's is now the largest Protestant church in the city.

The church building that you find today is a 1950's rebuild of the 17th-century Baroque style church that burned down during WWII bombing raids. During the church rebuild, a simpler and modest interior was given to the church. In later decades an important cycle of Baroque paintings removed prior to the church being destroyed have begun to be reinstalled in the church. These are nice to see along with a few other historic items which have been returned to adorn the main church hall. The exterior of the church was and has been restored to resemble its pre-war era appearance.

Note: During our December visit, we found much scaffolding and protective material basically covering the entire exterior of St. Catherine's Church as part of restoration efforts. This gives the church the appearance of being closed but it is not. There is a marked open passage for visitors to use to enter and visit the inside of the church.
