THE PHILIPPEION Its construction began by Philip Il after his victory in the battle of Chaironeia 338 B.C. and was dedicated to Zeus. After Philip's death it was completed by his son, Alexander the Great. It is the only circular building in the Altis and it is encircled by a collonade. The outer columns of lonic order with bases in the Attic lonic style supported an lonic entablature of shell-limestone, while in the interior, attached to the wall stood nine Corinthian semicolumns and in the middle, opposite the entrance a semicircular pedestal. The top of the roof, which was laid with clay-tiles ended in a bronze poppy, which held the beams together. Philippeion was a heroon built in order to glorify the Macedonian dynasty, of which five chryselephantine statues were set up in. the interior, crafted by the famous sculptor Leochares.

Philippeion is the only circular structure and the only one dedicated to the people in the sacred area, ALTIS. It is a memorial erected by Philip II, King of Macedonia in honor of the victory at Chaeronea, 338 BC, and completed by his son, Alexander the Great.
