The Temple of Aphrodite stands as a poignant reminder of the island’s ancient Greek heritage. Located on Symi Square, just beyond the Eleftherias (Liberty) Gate, this 3rd-century B.C. site dedicated to the goddess of love and beauty offers a captivating, if modest, connection to the past. Though now reduced to ruins, the temple’s remnants—scattered sandstone blocks and fallen columns—evoke a sense of its former grandeur. The site, enclosed by a small fence, is thoughtfully accompanied by an informative plaque in Greek and English, detailing its historical significance and the belief that the revered Aphrodite Pudica statue, now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, once graced this sacred space.

The weathered inscriptions on some stones, still faintly visible, invite visitors to imagine the temple’s vibrant past, when it stood as a beacon of devotion near the ancient port, honoring Aphrodite as the patroness of ports. The setting itself is a harmonious blend of history and ambiance, with the temple sharing Symi Square with charming landmarks like the Hasan Bei Manor and a quaint fountain.

The proximity to the bustling Mandraki Harbour and the medieval charm of the Old Town enhances the experience, making it a perfect stop during a leisurely exploration. While the ruins may not be as imposing as other ancient sites, their understated elegance and historical weight make them well worth a brief visit. A quick 10-minute pause is enough to absorb the site’s significance, though those with a keen interest in ancient Greece may linger to reflect on its...

The Temple of Aphrodite is one of the most captivating archaeological sites on Rhodes, offering a glimpse into the island’s rich mythological and religious past. Situated near the ancient city of Ialyssos on the northwest coast, this temple was dedicated to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, beauty, and fertility.

Dating back to the 4th century BCE, the temple was once a grand structure adorned with elegant columns and statues, where locals and pilgrims came to honor the goddess. Though only ruins remain today—scattered stones and fragmented foundations—the site’s setting on a gentle hill overlooking the sea provides a magical atmosphere that stirs the imagination.

The temple’s proximity to other ancient sites like the Acropolis of Ialyssos makes it a rewarding stop for history enthusiasts exploring Rhodes beyond its medieval walls. Walking among the remains, visitors can sense the spiritual significance the temple once held and appreciate how the landscape itself was part of the worship experience.

Visiting is free, and the site is open year-round, though spring and autumn offer the most pleasant weather. Don’t forget your camera—sunrise or sunset here creates breathtaking views blending history with...

Just to know the history of Aphrodite and all that was written about her life and goings on, it seemed amazing to actually be there, see the ruins. Also to be able to of walked close to it, where others in history have once been👍😀

It's only a viewing point, no access onto the ruins. Only to let your imagination run wild😉🤣

There are so many ruins within the old town area to view and so close together.

I found Rhodes an amazing place to visit due to its historical past! And, many of its old buildings still standing and your able to wander through...

Thought today there's nothing much there, the stones that are still standing date back to the 3rd century BC. It has been built near the port as it was thought that Aphrodite was the goddess of ports. She was the daughter of Zeus and Dione. You'll find many ruins and shrines in Aphrodite's honor around the island of Rhodos. The whole area is closed off, with only an info sign on the right side.
