We stumbled upon this restaurant while strolling through the old town. It was quite early in the day, and when walking past, I was told by one of the women outside about the restaurant, the pita, and traditionally made Greek food. I think it was Maria. She said that she's aware of the time, but if we do think about stopping somewhere for something to eat that we consider coming back. We walked off about 50 yards and turned around to coke back. We're so glad we did. We were shown inside to a table, and the building was magnificent. The stone walls and wooden ceiling are amazing. We were served a beer while we browsed through the menu. There's so much to choose from, and it all sounded really good. So I asked our server for recommendations. Out of the handful of items recommended, we both chose to go for the Kliftiko Lamb with rice and Greek potatoes.
Kleftiko lamb is a traditional Greek dish that consists of slow-cooked lamb that is typically marinated in a mixture of herbs, garlic, and lemon juice, then wrapped in parchment paper and cooked in a clay oven. The name "kleftiko" means "stolen" in Greek, and the dish is said to have been originally cooked by Greek bandits who would steal a lamb and then cook it in a pit covered with hot coals to avoid being detected by the authorities.
The slow-cooking process results in tender and flavorful lamb that falls off the bone. Kleftiko lamb is often served with roasted potatoes, vegetables, and a side of tzatziki sauce. It is a popular dish in Greek cuisine and can be found in many Greek restaurants around the world.
As soon as we tasted the lamb we knew we had found a really good restaurant. When we had finished we were so full as the dish size was really good. We were too full for a desert but when we asked for the bill we were treated to a free scoop of thier ice cream. A really nice gesture and it was also delicious.
We actually came back a few days later on our second to last day in Rhodes and had the same meal again! This time we did have a desert, ice cream for 2 to share with fresh Strawberries. It was huge! Both of us not convinced we would get through it made a start and before we knew it we had finished it! The banana ice cream is really something spectacular!
We also found the prices to be reasonable too!
Thank you. If we return to Rhodes at any point we will definitely be back! If you're here then please visit. You won't be...
Read moreThe disappointment of a great holiday. Lady out the front asked us to look at the menu, we saw that there was no lamb gyros or halloumi gyros (I don’t eat meat) so we asked if this could be done and was not a problem according to the lady. When ordering the waiter (who was very nice) said we couldn’t change it- we tried to explain to him that the lady we suspect was an owner had said it was okay. They spoke amongst themselves and we felt quite embarrassed, my husband then got a lamb souvlaki which wasn’t what he ordered and I was given a wrap with halloumi and a couple of chips, no salad or sauce and was very thin. I asked a young waiter if I could have salad, his English was very could but very passive aggressive and had a bad attitude. I was given a lecture that Greeks don’t put halloumi in the gyros’. We had many gyros’ on our holiday and back home, and not a problem, usually already on the menu. But he went on to say I would have been asked if I wanted salad or not and because I had halloumi I was not asked, it was all very confusing. He did put some salad in it but it was still tiny and not a good gyros. We felt like we were treated like a laughing stock, if the lady at the front had said no she cannot do this for us we would have accepted and left but we were used for business and never got what we wanted. Giving such a low rating as there was no apology at all but rather an uncalled for elitist attitude over gyros’ from a young waiter who was walking around punching the walls out of boredom. A lot most hospitable and beautiful restaurants...
Read moreA tragic end to a perfect holiday.
The disaster started with a Greek salad which arrived with hard tomatoes and barely any feta. The portion size was barely enough for two people, a shock since salads I have ordered in other restaurants have been more than enough and full meals themselves. For my main, I ordered the grilled calamari. With cautious optimism, I had my first bite only to be filled with disappointment. It was rubbery with no seasoning, and the only flavour came from the burnt calamari rings. The yellow dipping sauce just tasted like salt and did not benefit the dish in any form at all. The lemon segment provided to accompany the calamari was too small and not juicy enough to douse a single calamari ring. The accompanying (bland!!!!!) vegetables and potatoes consisted of two pieces of extremely soggy courgette, a quarter of a potato and regrets.
After telling the waiters that we were not keen on the food, they provided a free dessert (a peace offering?) of ice cream and kataifi. This only made things worse as the ice cream was too soft and the pastry was soggy.
The bathrooms were sticky, had a door that would not lock and a hand dryer that did not work. In addition, it was not immediately clear which bathrooms were for males and females. Please make the signs clearer.
Please don't go to this restaurant. For half the price, you can find much better food everywhere else nearby.
