The cathedral, located near Lake Como, is one of the most important buildings in the region. It is commonly described as the last Gothic cathedral built in Italy: construction on it, on the site of the earlier Romanesque cathedral dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore, began in 1396, 10 years after the foundation of Milan Cathedral. The construction works, started under the supervision of Lorenzo degli Spazzi di Laino, did not finish until 1770 with the completion of the Rococo cupola by Filippo Juvarra. The imposing west front was built between 1457 and 1498 and features a rose window and a portal between two statues of Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger, natives of Como.

Situated in the Piazza Duomo, Como Cathedral is a stone building that seems too large for the narrow streets that surround it. It towers above the nearby buildings, and dominates the square. The front of the building is gothic in style, and decorated with arches and arched windows. The cathedral is built in a cross shape, and the rear of the building has three turquoise 'half rotundas', as well as a massive central turquoise rotunda topped off with a smaller cupola. Entrance is free, but there's an optional donation box if you want to support the cathedral's upkeep. A beautiful place to while away some time, and a cool place if you want to escape the summer's heat.

Como Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, takes center stage as the main place of worship in the city of Como. Dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the cathedral's construction spanned from the 14th to the 18th centuries. It holds great significance as one of northern Italy's most prominent religious structures. The cathedral's grand facade, an awe-inspiring sight, was completed in the latter half of the 15th century. Notable features include a captivating rose window and a portal adorned by statues representing the renowned natives of Como, Pliny the Elder and Pliny the Younger.

The Cattedrale di S. Maria Assunta di Como is not far from the lake and in the the main square. This cathedral was started in the 1400's and was not completed until the 1600's. They were persistent and it sure paid off as this Cathedral is magnificent, breath taking and awe inspiring. It is so huge it is impossible to capture the entire structure, marble, tapestries, multiple altars, stained glass windows, tombs, statutes and more. I unfortunately didn’t have much time to spend here but was in awe with what I did get to see. If I am ever in the Lake Como area again I would definitely come see it again and spend more time here.

Free entrance! Also.. Look up! That ceiling definitely humbles you. Walking around the side of the back also allowed for a different and less crowded view. Central to Como town, this place seems to be a common rendezvous area for people to meet — locals and trousers alike. So, find a place near by to sit and have an afternoon apero and just enjoy the people-watching while you write your postcards! Do a quick wiki of this place before going. There’s some cool architectural snippets to be had. Good historical landmark!
