Fontana di Campo de' Fiori — Attraction in Rome

19th-century fountain was built to replace the one known as the Fountain of the Tureen, designed by Giacomo Della Porta in 1590.This latter remained in the centre of the square until it was dismantled to make room for the monument dedicated to the monk and philosopher Giordano Bruno. It was rebuilt in 1924 in Piazza della Chiesa Nuova, in front of the church of Santa Maria in Vallicella.Following the restoration of Campo de' Fiori, a new fountain, fed by the Acqua Paola, was rebuilt in the square. It reproduces the basin designed by della Porta in the dimensions and proportions but without the "lid" of the original fountain. The oval-shaped fountain, located at one end of the square, has an external basin made up of regular blocks of Baveno granite. This is a replica of the original Giacomo della Porta fountain called Terrina that was originally located in the centre of the square in 1590 but dismantled in 1889 when the monument to Giordano Bruno was erected here.

Around a decade later, this replica of Terrina was built and installed here in the back of the market square where you find it today. It is fun to see when exploring the market. Not in operation when we viewed it recently but it has been when we've passed by...

La Fontana in Campo de’ Fiori, si trova nel centro storico di Roma, Rione VI (Parione), nella suggestiva Piazza di “CAMPO DE’ FIORI”

Venne realizzata nel XIX secolo ed è la copia di quella che l’architetto Giacomo della Porta aveva progettato per il centro della Piazza e conosciuta come “Terrina” termine dialettale per indicate una zuppiera, alla quale vagamente assomiglia per la sua forma.

Nel 1889, la "Terrina" fu smontata e trasportata nei magazzini comunali, per far posto alla statua di Giordano Bruno, e solo nel 1924 fu ricostruita in Piazza della Chiesa Nuova, dove ancora oggi possiamo ammirarla.

Alla fine dell’800, in posizione decentrata, fu inserita nella piazza come abbiamo scritto sopra, una copia, dell'antica fontana, ad esclusione della copertura e ad alcuni doversi accorgimenti.

La Fontana, attualmente funzionante, si compone di due vasche una superiore quadrilobata poggiata su una base a forma di cubo, al centro del bacino è posto un ornamento dal quale zampilla l’acqua che fuoriuscendo, si riversa sulla grande vasca ovale sottostante, leggermente rialzata da terra e con un grande bordo arrotondato. L’effetto estetico, pur nella sua semplicità, è buono per l’aggraziata proporzione degli elementi
