We decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary at Ristorante Maffei. We were seated at a nice enough table almost in the farthest corner from the main restaurant door we then and chose the "Present" tasting menu.
The first two courses arrived in a very timely manner and were good, but then a large number of other guests arrived and the staff simply stopped walking round the courtyard checking on other diners while they seated the newcomers. This led to our next course taking more than 40 minutes to arrive (and I think the team was genuinely surprised that they had missed us).
I'm always more interested how these situations are rectified than how they occurred, and we felt as if the team tried hard to pick up from the mistake. The food was great all the way through.
At this point I would have given a 4-star review.
The other diners left and we finished our meal and asked for the bill which arrived promptly - then the same thing happened again. After twenty minutes I was literally waving my (lurid green) credit card in the air to try to attract the attention of anyone who actually wanted my money. Once can be forgiven with the right recovery, but twice in one evening is really unforgiveable and so the 3 stars. I really wanted to like you and I enjoyed the food, but the details matter too!
I would suggest, if you want to eat here, that you avoid the tables in the corner just to the right as you enter the courtyard. They are in some kind of blind spot...
Read moreso far we were able to get a table relatively quick and the layout of the restaurant is nice. all of the cups were dusty when we entered but they removed the plates and wine glasses when realizing we didn’t get any wine the plates turned out to be just for design. menu is very minimal having about 5 things every page and having more drink variety than food. at the beginning we received 5 loaves of bread which were thick and fluffy and we also received about 2 table spoons of and buttery tomato paste which was very nice. the food arrived very quickly taking about 15-20 minutes. the food was very delicious but the quantities were too little for one person to have one dish each although the salad contained plentiful amount. the dessert took too long but when it arrived it was very nice. the food was overpriced considering how much food was served. overall the food was very good and when considering how good the place is compared in the world of fine dining it deserves its michelin star. the world of fine dining is complicated because fine dining restaurants require so much more than normal to be fine dining. fine dining restaurants need to look appealing and have prices that require a certain amount of wealth so they get a...
Read moreThe shaded courtyard location is very pleasant. But it’s too expensive for what it is. The portions are small and it’s very much appearance over substance. The service was also really slow for cold dishes (we went for lunch) that could be largely pre-prepared and the vibe was super rigid. Several people were turned away cos they didn’t want to combine tables for groups of four or five or have people just having drinks. But if that means you have tables empty at what should be your busiest time, what’s the point? When I dared to politely ask (twice) how long an ice cream dessert would take to come (it took 25 minutes and we had to go somewhere else after the restaurant) I was told the second time that it was coming with a super aggressive shouty scowl and no eye contact. The dessert was eventually plonked down on the table in front of my 86 year old dad without a word, no smile or eye contact or apology and with great aggression. It was a hysterical over reaction given the prices, the dessert in question and the wait. But since it hadn’t even been my father asking why behave like that to him? So rude and unwarranted. Even if a customer is annoying you this is not the...
