On the south side of this "Awataguchi Aokusu Garden" is the famous Tendai sect temple Shoren-in, also known as Shoren-in Monzeki. It is an ancient temple where many members of the imperial family served as head priests and was even a temporary imperial palace during the Edo period. It is said that several giant camphor trees in the temple grounds were planted by Saint Shinran, who was ordained here, and are also famous for being the subject of Higashiyama Kaii's paintings. I guess that's where the name came from. The entire site is surrounded by a fence, and the gate is only open during the day, making it a fully fenced site. It is apparently famous for its weeping cherry blossoms. In the garden, there is a marker stone marking the "Special Historical and Natural Features Preservation District" based on the Ancient Capitals Act. This preservation district is designated by law regardless of land ownership, but after designation, local governments can purchase the land if the owner wishes, so I think this place was owned by the city in this way and developed and opened as a place of relaxation for local residents and tourists.
