I live in hotels. No hotel is perfect but the Palace Hotel in Tokyo comes quite close. Room 1808. Very spacious room. View of the Palace and Tokyo is excellent. The room could use updating but I can think of no particular item that was wanting of attention. The balcony was huge. My son loved it! Me, too. Afternoon sun!

Room service is outstanding. Delicious food. Served efficiently by unfailingly polite staff. Breakfast was included. Way too much food for me but all good. Requires some discipline to not overeat.

Imperial Bar is outstanding. I drank a bit too much but the drinks are not terribly strong. Easy to drink to contentment rather than excess. I left a 5000 JPY tip. You might feel compelled to do the same, culture of no-tipping not withstanding. Steak sandwich was among the best I have ever eaten. On special Watermelon drink was my choice times five.

Arrival at hotel, front desk, etc. are what you should expect. I saw a new Toyota Century replete with poles on the fender for the flags that diplomats use. The whole place is like that; elegant yet somehow modern. The Toyota Century must be seen to be believed. I was surprised the chauffeur did not complain about my copious attention and nearly sticking my nose to the left-side window.

Location could be better, as in right on the Ginza, but then you would lose the absolute tranquility of the setting. We thought about staying at the Mitsui but the hotel is not close to the Palace in terms of service. Some comparisons: Don't waste your money at the Peninsula, unless a lot has changed. Ritz Carlton and J.W. are great choices but not in the same neighborhood.

OK, the smallest of nits and picks: No maple syrup comes with the waffles. Good for me, the ten year old not so much. My wife pointed out that the menu does list maple syrup as accompaniment to the waffles. The food in the lounge could offer more variety. The beer is cold and on tap. The Prosciutto is excellent. Really, more than adequate but some folks might expect more of a spread.

The staff of the hotel is great and that includes every person I interacted with.
