Japan Coast Guard Museum Yokohama — Attraction in Yokohama

A small museum that you’ll spend maybe 30 minutes at most in, but it is fascinating (and free!)

It centres around a recovered wreckage of a North Korean spy ship that engaged in a skirmish with the Japan Coast Guard. The ship is presented with recovered items placed around it. As you make your way round there is a projection of the actual incident from the coast guard point of view, well worth stopping to watch how it played out with the wreckage in front of you.

There are descriptions written in English as well as an audio guide in various languages. The video is in Japanese only but it’s pretty obvious what is going on.

There’s a small gift shop at the end selling Coast Guard trinkets.

I was blown away by the stunning exhibits - it's like a treasure trove of maritime wonders! From cool coast guard vessels to interactive displays, there's something for everyone. Plus, the multilingual info (Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean) makes it easy peasy to understand, even for a landlubber like me!

And, wow, the actual North Korean Spy Vessel on display is a real showstopper! You can even peek inside - talk about a rare glimpse into a secretive world!

I happened upon the Museum by chance, not expecting to see anything of great interest....boy was I wrong! As I entered, I was approached by an older gentleman with wonderful English who asked if he could show me around the Museum. What I received was a personal tour!! The gentleman was very informative with a dry sense of humour, very unexpected.
