A visit to Kaunas isn't complete without an hour spent at the Velnio Muziejus š. As the only museum of its kind globally, its very existence speaks to its authenticity and unique cultural significance. āThe collection, which began with Lithuanian artist Antanas ŽmuidzinaviÄius and has grown to over 3,000 pieces through international donations, is truly global. On its three floors, you'll see how different cultures interpret the devilāfrom mischievous Lithuanian folk carvings to intricate masks and sculptures from countries like India, Mexico, and Japan. This diversity provides a fascinating, multifaceted look at the mythological creature worldwide. āBeyond the static exhibits, the museum incorporates unique art expositions, featuring both contemporary fine and applied arts. These often include creative video shows and modern interpretations that bring a fresh, artistic perspective to the ancient themes. The museum is small enough that you can easily navigate the entire collection in an hour or so, making it a perfect, wonderfully bizarre, and insightful stop if you're in the area. Itās a great piece of Lithuanian...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreTook a field trip here with a group of friends. We were satisfied with the experience overall. It's something different to see.
The admissions were about five Euros. The museum is broken up into three floors, with an adjacent art gallery. I was expecting historical demonic pieces from ancient civilizations or medieval Europe. The exhibits are mainly creations from different artists, with each piece being significant to its place of origin (different countries have different views on what the devil looks like). The exhibits aren't purely all demonic looking, you get plenty of ghouls and witches and stuff like that. But, it wasn't disappointing or anything, we still enjoyed it! The third/top floor is where you get more pieces from different countries.
I didn't feel creeped out at all, I usually find stuff like this kind of cool. It's something different to experience if you're in Kaunas. The tickets aren't expensive, so if you have time to kill, I recommend checking this place out!
I bought a little souvenir from the gift shop. I keep it in my china with the rest of my collectibles (see...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWhen I heard an ambitious name such as the Devil's Museum, I expected to see historical objects belonging to the concept of the devil in various cultures. Later, when I learned that the contents of the museum were the collection of an artist, I thought that I would see an artistic exhibition. However, this museum has managed to fail in both areas in my eyes. Yes, you can find depictions of demons from various cultures in this museum. However, I must clearly state that these objects are not historical artifacts, and the quality of artistic work is controversial. I was disappointed to learn that even the oldest of the works in the museum belong to the 20th century and that many of them were gifts to the owner of the collection by his friends. The only part I enjoyed visiting was the workshop of the collector who...
