This is apparently Melaka’s oldest catholic church, but arguably also the least welcoming one. To understand my point of view, I might add that I am a 59-year old male Catholic from Europe and intended to spend some time praying here.
I visited on a Tuesday 1pm, and although being the only visitor, the Church servant first requested me to hide my bicyle behind the church and then walk back the longest possible detour. It seems this parish is more about discipline and order than a welcoming culture.
Next I was refused entry to the church because I wore a tanktop (it was unbearably hot and I was drenched in sweat), and was asked to cover my shoulders (don't let anybody tell you that the Bible mentions God being offended by bare shoulders: even the Vatican in Rome has a more relaxed dress code!)
However, it is questionable if visiting the interior was worth the effort of going back to my hotel to fetch a shoulder cover: whilst the exterior still shows the beauty and elegance of the original building, the interior clearly has been vandalised by renovations during the mid 1900 and lacks any authentic original feature from the 18th century. Even the artwork, sculptures, altars and stained glass windows seem to date from a much more recent period. And if there was some authentic historic artwork, you would not be able to admire it anyway: the entire front of the church was closed to the public.
As for my idea to have a contemplative moment of praying, it was ruined by the Church servant following me everywhere and observing closely every movement I would make. A most unpleasant sensation to be under surveillance!
All in all, a beautiful building from the outside, but an irritating way to treat visitors (a fact that has been mentioned in several other reviews here, so I guess my impression was not an isolated incident). The priest of the parish might want to consider the negative, rigid image he gives of Catholicism to visitors from...
