Huge money grab. This is my 2nd time doing the catamaran trip to Isla Mujeres and this time was a huge waste of time and money. I booked our trip (family of 8) through the travel agency we arranged transportation with from the airport to our resort Occidental Xcaret. MTS Mexico Travel Solutions. There was pickup and drop-off from the resort, which was nice and convenient. So that and the dock fees they typically sneak in there was taken care of. That was a plus. We got to the docks and waited about 40 minutes to board and launch. Super early 630 AM so if you want to eat and have coffee in the morning you are going to forgo that. The crew manning the boat was nice and fun and polite but that is where the pleasantries end. This boat was crowded. The snorkeling was a joke. They speak mostly Spanish which is understandable but there were quite a few people who only spoke English so we missed a lot of their information. They dropped us in at point A and you must swim to point B (about 100 yards or a 20 minute swim). They had us all unload in a huge throng, and people were kicking water and each other. The goggles fog up, there were not a lot of fish and they rushed us to point B. Getting back into the boat was a mess too. They had everyone load on one side of the boat and people were shoving and pushing and there was no order. If you want to snorkel, this is not the trip to do quality snorkeling. Moving on to the "open bar". Bar was crowded and the drinks did not contain alcohol. The mixed drinks were juice and margarita mixer. The only way to catch a buzz is to drink beer. Corona and Modelo lol. Good luck. Part of the trip was either selecting the premium tour(which I am so glad I did not pay an extra 30 something for) or the light package which allows 2 hours of advertised free time. They rushed us through the snorkeling portion of the tour so quickly that we arrived at the island with over 4 hours of free time and that was a nightmare too. The people there are aggressive when trying to sell their products and services, which I know and remember from last time, but we had 2 and a half hours more than planned so we ended up spending too much money at the restaurant just trying to find some shade and avoiding the used car salesmen lol. They have cabanas and beach beds you can rent for an outrageous amount so the restaurant was the most viable option for us. The food at the restaurant was very good and the tequila tasting was great. Beware they just want to sell you bottles. Everything is more expensive due to having to import everything by ferry to the island. Overall we had a good time but the trip is NOT as advertised. Oh, they will try to get you to rent golf carts and that is a hustle too. They have electric carts and gas carts. If you rent a cart, to electric and get it for the 2 hours. 1 hour is a waste of your time and money. The island is just big enough that if you rent for an hour you can't really stop anywhere. That...
Read moreI recently took the Excaret ferry to Isla Mujeres, and it was a fantastic experience! One of the best tips I can share is to book your tickets online. In person, tickets cost $30 USD, but online you get a 10% discount, making it about $27 USD. Booking online also gives you the option of an open ticket, so you can board any ferry throughout the day, which is super convenient.
The ferry ride itself was smooth and enjoyable. The trip to Isla Mujeres took about 25 minutes, and the ferry was large and spacious with plenty of seating options. I sat on the top deck, where the views were amazing. Despite 30 mph winds and high waves, the ride was steady, and as someone prone to seasickness, I was happy to report I felt fine the entire time. Sitting on the top deck meant we got splashed a little, but it was just a small amount of water and didn’t affect the experience at all.
The staff was friendly, and everything ran on schedule. Whether you’re traveling for the views, comfort, or convenience, the Excaret ferry is a great choice. I’ll definitely use it again the next time...
Read moreI had a terrible experience with the security staff. Included in my ticket it was included the free entrance at the scenic tower! And I went there after coming back from isla Mujeres! I have a small certified service dog, and despite showing the official documentation and explaining the situation, three different staff members separately harassed me, telling me I couldn’t stay.
According to Mexican law, service dogs must be allowed everywhere as they are essential for people with disabilities. The staff’s lack of knowledge and empathy was shocking and unacceptable. Instead of apologizing or correcting their mistake, they kept insisting.
I called the police as well but they didn’t do that much! The security was so disrespectful protecting their employees! You should know the rule of your country as well!
Shame on them. I hope they one day experience firsthand what it means to rely on a service animal so they can finally understand the discrimination and stress they caused me....
