Carnitas Michoacan — Restaurant in Cancún

This place was highly recommended by the hotel staff for inexpensive authentic mexican food. For this description they were accurate but the food was only good (not great) and lacked flavor. As we continue you'll learn why they lost STARS.

We ordered chicken quesadillas (with flour tortillas), a taco mix *with cheese (chicken, beef, carnitas), a plain gordita (comes with cheese and sour cream) and couple of drinks and a few extras for the baby.

The service was great. Everyone was very accommodating *BUT a bit overbearing as it seems they hovered around the table waiting for an opportunity to serve us. For some this can either be a pro or a con. We however care to be observed from a distance. No water was offered but we understand Cancun's water situation. Considering this, there was no need to keep swarming to assist us.

The food was made quickly and was fresh. We honestly expect that at every Mexican restaurant considering the meats are already prepared and it doesn't take much to cook. Kudos to that.

Here's where Carnitas Michoacan looses points. I was charges inappropriately for items. 20mxn for a flour tortillas substitute (Mexico doesn't charge for substitutions) and another 20mxn upcharge for cheese which was already incorporated in the price. There was a 20mxn charge for sour cream which is excessive only because it was given as a side and never put on the item as it describes in the menu.

Trust .me, we understand Covid has impacted sales and businesses need money but not at the expense of lying and cheating us. We made sure the waiter was VERY aware of what they did and urged him not to worry about adjusting the price. In turn they got much less tip (and we are always generous especially during Covid)

After the fact, we concluded it would've been best to have them adjust the cost and us tip accordingly to help others bc from their perspective we still gave a bad tip. They wouldn't understand why. (It's bc of the 60 extra pesos charged on our bill)

Well BE AWARE. In our case the 1 stars reviews stating that you get will get cheated and overcharged with confrontation was TOTALLY RIGHT and the tacos are not even good! We ate ordering some tacos, a beer and a pineapple volka twist. The bill came with the pineapple drink being 180 pesos instead of 75. While we received the bill the waiter acted like he was cleaning the table to take the menu so we can’t go back to it and readily confirm. I had to insist that it wasn’t the price of the drink and raise my voice for the others customers to hear so the waiter can bring back the menu again. The waiter came back trying to convince me that I ordered something else (a mango can drink not even a pineapple one) and I refused (there aren’t even a drink for 180 pesos on the back of their menu!) He then seemed to argue with the manager and came back with the SAME BILL without any change which I refused to pay. Note that some comment was talking about that manager who has a pink décoloration mark near the mouth on his right cheek. He is absolutely awful, and was making angry gestures while looking in our direction while talking to the waiter. I now feel that they put on a show so you will be sorry for the waiter being angry at the manager and pay it anyway. We were lucky some other customers were there and I feel like that is why we were able to just pay for what we ordered and leave safely. SO IN CONCLUSION A VERY DISHONEST AND DANGEROUS PLACE...

DON'T DO IT ••• DON'T DO IT ••• DON'T DO IT Stopped to eat here on the evening of January 14 2024 by myself. Ordered 3 tacos, 2 Cokes, side of rice and beans. The tacos were the bomb! The beans were boring and rice was inedible. My bill should have been 330 pesos, not exactly cheap. Which is about $20. When I got my bill it was 545 pesos, $32. When I said it was not right my waitress brings a handheld calculator to show me. She punches in numbers and then shows me and says "you see"? The calculator was blank, either dead batteries or not turned on. She acts like she can see it, is truly pathetic. When I asked for a menu to show her the prices she REFUSED. Next thing I know I am surrounded by 6 people who apparently work there acting all tough. Tried to intimidate me into paying it. Threatened to call the police. I was mad as h*ll but not going to get into it anymore with these THIEVES. I paid the bill and I swear the waitress who knew no English says "that bill did not include a tip". I started laughing, was too much! These people are TOTAL THIEVES. You can read other reviews and how people have been ripped off here too. As unbelievable as it sounds it is 100%...
