No princípio e ainda hoje para muitos, era chamada de praça do Pão. A atual designação data de 1909, em homenagem a um comandante dos bombeiros voluntários. Num segundo momento, até fins do século XX, foi um local um tanto "desarrumado", com viaturas estacionadas, Iluminação pouco eficaz e algumas pensões e residenciais. Agora é um espaço bonito, com jardim, restauração...
