We booked the hotel via travel agency 3 nights (fully paid). When we arrived, there was no booking information, and we waited 10 minutes looking at three receptionists on the computer to figure things out, not even a eye contacts or smile. Definitely not hotel feeling. What a reception! We believed booking a standard room, two beds, however hotel stated two beds were twin beds (never heard of 5 star hotel), so we took double beds (Queen). Finally they let us checked in but hold credit card if they could not find booking info, we had to pay out of pocket. Have a nice day.
Hotel and room:
We had 304 room, so-call standard room (extremely small). There is only one desk seat which could not fit into the desk, very small space between the desk (TV sit on it) and the bed. No way you can use this chair for the desk there is no second chair or sofa for second person, so the only place to sit is the bed Extremely small feel like under 250 sqf certainly not qualify SLH (small luxury hotel chain) which we were staying there is no drawer for clothes no coffee machines, no tea bags The shower screen is at wrong side wall picture with frame light stick out for the small room is ridiculous addition room with a ugly view from the street wifi is out of date, slow and logout often TV programs really cheap, you have to pay to watch movie, and three English stations only, plus stream youtube which never worked, freeze full time (bandwidth issue) no coffee maker, tea bags etc. one bottle water per day is free, two pieces of chocolate on your bed every night. you can have glass of port afternoon Lobby is glorious to attract people, as we suck into it
Problems:
Room temperature control was broken, and reported to front desk. Instead sending repair, they provided us portable heater. I can assume it was known issue. (picture) LED light on vanity mirror did not work, and reported to front desk. Two repair men came and left without explanation, not fixed and never heard them again We had some connection issues, and engineering came to connected but turn the language from English to Portugal as default on google which took us a while to change it back. 24/7 noise form street and construction noise after midnight everyday (picture) Breakfast included plus menu to order. The breakfast was so so not very professionally prepared, no fresh squeezed juice, very bad taste of mixed juice. We ordered a noodle soup (Japanese style I assume), when we asked chopsticks, the waiter did not follow, and wend to the kitchen, and return for non-existence. So we use folk to scoop noodle resourcefully, gave up. The cooking was terrible, uneatable. when you enter the breakfast room, hotel stick the stand in middle of the walk way, total unprofessional. I felt like not trusted Overall, the service is 1 and hostility is 2 star. Hotel rating is inflated, should be only 3-4 stars, it should be taken from SLH list. Staffs needs retraining, and better cooker needed. Must improve TV qualities.
There is a long way to go to qualify 5 stars, and SLH...
Read moreI rarely see value in booking Small Luxury Hotel (SLH) properties via Hyatt for cash because the price differential is usually too high, but for one rare time, I found an SLH hotel with the same rates on Hyatt vs SLH, but it was for suites only (lower categories of rooms were more expensive on Hyatt, as usual). I decided to book via Hyatt to earn the elite night credits which will most likely be needed this year, unlike 2020-2021.
The hotel itself claims to be the oldest 5-star hotel in Porto and it was clearly a nice property for classic luxury and good service. The room itself left a bit to be desired but if the price is right I can recommend it, although in the future I might book via SLH instead of Hyatt.
My upgrade success at SLH is often subpar and this hotel was no different. I booked a junior suite and received a mediocre +1 upgrade to normal suite as per the rules – they did not go above and beyond. To be honest it was just a larger room and not really a suite, the bathroom was quite cramped, and to make matters worse there was wasted space at the end of the shower as they did not extend the enclosure all the way up to the wall.
In the bedroom, the bed was oversized and very comfortable, but the views were non-existent – we could only see the inner court and the inside of the hotel restaurant from our low floor so it was necessary to draw the sheers for privacy.
Breakfast was included as part of the Hyatt benefits. The restaurant itself was stylish with very high ceilings so it was a nice venue to start the day. There was a buffet with decent choices including smoked salmon, guacamole, sautéed veggies, in addition to more traditional options. It was also possible to order egg dishes although the eggs benedicts were so-so.
Overall Infante Sagres is a nice historical hotel with attractive common areas, the room was not the best but service was on point. The lack of material upgrade added to the questionable value for the money of booking via Hyatt, however it’s not like Porto is shock full of properties from international hotel chains especially not at the luxury level so I can be more tolerant in the absence of fierce competition. I briefly considered booking at InterContinental instead which is not far from Infante Sagres and realized that for my dates, a junior suite at Infante Sagres was only modestly more expensive than the entry level rooms at IC and I would get more space at IS, not to mention that upgrades at IHG are traditionally even worse than SLH and no breakfast benefit at IC. I would consider returning to IS in the future but I might also try more standard and boring hotels instead to...
Read moreI stayed at the Hospes Infante Sagres for three nights, and it turned out to be one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I’ve had — especially given the price of nearly €1,400 for the stay.
On the first night, I couldn’t sleep at all. My room faced a side street with cafés and bars, and the noise continued until around 2 a.m. When I went to reception in the middle of the night, I was told the hotel was “fully booked” and that there was nothing they could do — not even provide a sleeping kit or earplugs.
The next morning, there was no record of my issue. The new receptionist looked completely unaware and uninterested, offering another room facing the main street — still noisy — with no apology or concern. Later in the day, a different receptionist finally apologized and promised an upgrade to a quieter room facing the inner courtyard. Unfortunately, when we received the new room, it was actually a downgrade: smaller, with less closet space, faulty bathroom lighting, dark marks on the walls, and once again facing the main street with constant traffic noise.
When I asked about some form of compensation, I was told they had provided a sleeping kit this time. After some back and forth I was offered a restaurant voucher — useless, since all our meals were already pre-booked elsewhere and it was something I had mentioned to them when I arrived. The receptionist said she’d check again with the manager, but no one ever followed up. To make things worse, after checkout the hotel charged me twice for the entire stay, despite confirming at reception that the bill had already been settled.
Breakfast was equally underwhelming. The service was completely inconsistent — some days you’d be shown to your seat, other days you’d just wander around. On our first morning, no one explained how anything worked; I spent five minutes trying to find plates while staff walked past without any interest. No one takes drink orders (basic even in 4* hotels), instead, guests queue for tea and coffee at two self-service machines like a motorway café, and often one machine was out of order because staff hadn’t bothered to replace the filter. Some food was local, but bread was often dry and the overall offering lacking for a hotel of this standing.
For a property presenting itself as a 5-star luxury hotel, the service, organization, and attention to detail were far below standard. The building itself is charming, but the management and staff training are seriously lacking. I would strongly recommend avoiding this hotel until they make major improvements to service, consistency,...
