Guaita, Cesta ( Fratta ) and the Montale Tower are the three fortress, simbol of Monte Titano ( Mount Titan ), defensive bulwarks of the liberty, so sacred to the San Marino population. It is wonderful to stand in front of the fortress and imagine its invincible role over many years. After sightseeing the Guaita fortress by the narrow passage of the Passo delle Streghe (means Passage of the Witches) , we continued to the second tower of Frata or Cesta. The Cesta is located on the highest of Monte Titano's summits. A Museum of Archaic Arms to honour Saint Marinus, created in 1956, is located in this tower and showcases over 1,550 weapons dating from the Medieval Era including: sidearms, spears and lances, firearms, bows and arrows, crossbows and coats of armour. During the Crusades in the 13th century, a second tower was built on the other tip of Monte Titano to protect and strengthen the defenses of the old part of the city. The Fratta Tower is not only a scenic highlight, but also steeped in history. It once served as a guardhouse, and today houses a small but interesting museum of ancient weapons. The collection gives a glimpse into the military history of the republic and adds a nice touch of context to the stronghold’s original purpose.
One of the best parts of the visit is climbing up to the watchtower. It brings you to one of the highest accessible points on Monte Titano—about 756 meters above sea level. From there, the views stretch for miles in every direction, making it a perfect spot for photos or simply to pause and enjoy the moment.
