How you rate this depends on when you go. Saturday sees it teaming with people eating and drinking at the various stalls which have bar stools and table top eating "station" dotted around the area and finding a place to sit can prove difficult. Oddly though, you have to be careful where you buy your drinks if sitting down. You can buy your food from anywhere but not your drinks and if you buy from somewhere you shouldn't someone will come and tell you off. Sunday to Tuesday it is much quieter. Fruit and vegetable stalls and fish stalls open but many of the food stalls are not and all the seating is packed away. Wednesday sees it open again but not as busy as Saturday. Food is tapas style..ie, small portions..and reasonable in quality. The area is clearly popular with the locals who seem to drink heavily but sensibly.. For grocery shopping, the market is open everyday (I think, although Sunday.might be limited) but for drinks and food and atmosphere, Wednesday to Saturday.

If you do nothing else in Cádiz do this! A hubbub of activity with everything you need for a wonderful meal. Really fresh and cheap fruit and vegetables, sold by local and friendly vendors. You can also stop and get a drink and some food and take a seat at a few of the outer stalls, or wander through the inner stalls for fishmongers extraordinaire. Expect to see fish being filleted with expert precision, whole dogfish, octopuses, sting rays, and of course plenty of locally caught camarones (tiny baby prawns) and langostines. Not to mention sea urchins as well! You really can’t find a better experience to get right into the heart of gaditano life.

Fantastic market, incredible quality on all the fresh fish and all the tapas was extremely tasteful. Unfortunately, one stall really ruined our experience. We were informed that the rules on the tables were that self-brought drinks not were allowed, but all the tables could be used as long as you bought food from any of the stalls. We spent around 15€ on food from different stalls, but didn't buy any drinks. An employee from an italian stall with almost no customers literally shouted at us to leave, even though we followed the rules completely, and were doing the exact thing as the other tables. We wanted to get the chance to buy drinks so we could stay, but he did not listen at all and had made up his mind. Very frustrating and unpleasant experience. Picture of the horrible stall underneath. Overall, very good market.

Mercado Central de Cadiz is a very good place to visit in Cadiz city, there is a huge quantity of shops with fresh products, you could buy from meat 🍗 to fish 🐟 and vegetables, including the typical products that you can buy in every market. In my opinion, the best experience here if you are visiting at the first time Cadiz is tried to have lunch inside the Mercado Central de Cadiz where you could buy for example the fish 🐟 the "pescaitos" in some of the different bars that are around the market and the very special is that you will eat them inside the market with a very cheap price and fresh products, I think this is unique here.

Recommended. A lovely market full of local and regional products. A few tourist groups arrive around lunchtime so it's best to see and shop between 9am and 11am especially for the seafood. You can ask the fishmongers for a slice of tuna (Steak/filleta) the exact size you'd like. The stalls offer a variety of tuna including defrosted (cheaper) and at the top end fresh 'red Tuna' that the region is famous for. We bought fresh clams (vongole/palourdes/almenas) the next day and they squirted jets of water as they were handled. In many parts of Europe you don't have access to fresh seafood so enjoy it here. Good value too

The best food market I have been to by a mile, the combination of the food market inside and small restaurants (food stalls) around is a brilliant idea. The famous food markets in e.g. Barcelona, Madrid and Seville are more for locals than travelers but this one takes the food market concept further by offering dishes made from fresh ingredients from the market. Everything we tasted was delicious (including seafood salads, paella and sherry) and the atmosphere was great on a sunny day. Mercado Central Cádiz is one of the highlights of our trip to Spain.
