Authentic but Overrated – A Mixed Experience at Mercado Central de Cádiz
The Mercado Central de Abastos in Cádiz offers a truly local experience — lively, colorful, and full of character. If you're looking to feel the pulse of the city, this is definitely one of the places to visit. It's bustling with people, fresh seafood everywhere, and a very authentic vibe that gives you a real taste of daily life in Cádiz.
That said, it can be very noisy and crowded, and if you’re not used to the local pace, it might feel a bit overwhelming. People tend to stare a lot too — maybe out of curiosity, maybe just the local way — but it can feel a little uncomfortable if you’re not expecting it.
As for the food stalls inside, they’re okay, but honestly, the restaurants just outside the market are much better. We had tastier and more relaxed meals a few steps away, without the noise and chaos.
All in all, it’s worth visiting for the atmosphere and the experience — but not necessarily for the best food or comfort. Go with the right expectations, and you’ll still come away with some...
Read moreHow you rate this depends on when you go. Saturday sees it teaming with people eating and drinking at the various stalls which have bar stools and table top eating "station" dotted around the area and finding a place to sit can prove difficult. Oddly though, you have to be careful where you buy your drinks if sitting down. You can buy your food from anywhere but not your drinks and if you buy from somewhere you shouldn't someone will come and tell you off. Sunday to Tuesday it is much quieter. Fruit and vegetable stalls and fish stalls open but many of the food stalls are not and all the seating is packed away. Wednesday sees it open again but not as busy as Saturday. Food is tapas style..ie, small portions..and reasonable in quality. The area is clearly popular with the locals who seem to drink heavily but sensibly.. For grocery shopping, the market is open everyday (I think, although Sunday.might be limited) but for drinks and food and atmosphere, Wednesday...
Read moreFantastic market, incredible quality on all the fresh fish and all the tapas was extremely tasteful.
Unfortunately, one stall really ruined our experience. We were informed that the rules on the tables were that self-brought drinks not were allowed, but all the tables could be used as long as you bought food from any of the stalls. We spent around 15€ on food from different stalls, but didn't buy any drinks. An employee from an italian stall with almost no customers literally shouted at us to leave, even though we followed the rules completely, and were doing the exact thing as the other tables. We wanted to get the chance to buy drinks so we could stay, but he did not listen at all and had made up his mind.
Very frustrating and unpleasant experience.
Picture of the horrible stall underneath.
Overall, very...
