Great historical place aside the Pâquis lakeside; this monument was built in the Jardin des Alpes, in the former natural harbor of Pâquis.

Herein resides the Duke of Brunswick, Charles d’Este-Guelph, a linguist, musician and knight.

Born in 1804, he was expelled from his duchy in 1830, located in what is now Germany. He fled into exile to various European cities including Paris, where he made a fortune and then moved to Geneva. In 1873, he died and bequeathed his immense fortune to Geneva in exchange for a beautiful funeral and a monument to his name. Never before had a mausoleum been built in Geneva and its construction was the subject of...

Zostały one usunięte w 1883 roku.- - The Brunswick Monument is a mausoleum with a height of 21 m, built in 1879 in the neo-Gothic style, to commemorate Charles II, the Duke of Brunswick. The prince, being in exile from 1830, staying among others in Paris, made a huge fortune. He then moved to Geneva, where in 1871 the prince gave his entire fortune to the city of Geneva. The condition, however, was to bury his body in a specially constructed mausoleum. It was supposed to be above the ground, like the Scaligeri tombs in Verona with a view of Lake Geneva. The rest of the fortune was transferred for the needs of the city of Geneva. A year after the monument was completed, the first damage was caused by two earthquakes and especially severe winter. They were removed in 1883.

The Brunswick Monument is a stunning neo-Gothic tribute to the Duke of Brunswick, tucked into a peaceful garden right by the lake. It’s beautifully detailed and makes a great stop if you’re strolling along the waterfront. Best of all, it’s just across from Geneva’s famous Jet d’Eau fountain, so you get two iconic sights in one visit. A quick but worthwhile stop with plenty of photo opportunities.
