Here are the instructions of worshiping Erawan Shrine. The Erawan Shrine is quite efficacious to prayer. When you enter the door, you can see the front side, which represents the peace (the beads), and then are the career (scepter), marriage (shell), wealth (brick) by clockwise.I will explain it in a simple manner, it will be better to follow the clockwise order when you are worshiping. Buy incense sticks in the temple where the Erawan Shrine lies in. It is said that those stuff purchased in the temple are most efficacious. Put a bunch of flowers, three incense sticks, a small elephant and a candle on each side. Then worship clockwise, it is best to take off your shoes when you worship. When you are worshiping, you ought to say your date of birth, your hometown, your current address and what you ask for. It must be specific including details. Also you need to say the way to fulfill your promise. You need to say the same things in front of every side of the Erawan Shrine. The more rare the way of fulfilling the promise, the easier it is to achieve your wish. Holy water purification: When you finish worshiping, you need to go to the left side to get the clean water, use the bowl to hold clean water and then pour or dip some water into the hair, forehead, face and arm, so that to purify the soul. Taboo: Don't take pictures when others are sincerely worshiping and do not be scantily clad. You should wear a long skirt and you can't wear slippers if you want to wear any skirt. Out of the reason of respect, girls are not supposed to go to the Erawan Shrine when you are in menstrual period. If you travel to Thailand specially for the Erawan Shrine while you are in menstrual period, you need to change your schedule or you can choose to go to Thailand again or stay for more days. The degree of how efficacious the Erawan Shrine is: The Erawan Shrine is indeed very effective. Once, a makeup artist seeks to earn 300,000 yuan in the near future and he did not say the time and how to earn. Soon he got a big order and earn 300,000 yuan. Erawan Shrine will try best to give you the best. ...

The Four-Faced Shrine at Erawan: Bangkok’s Spiritual Heart

In the middle of Bangkok’s busy commercial district, right next to luxury malls and the constant flow of traffic, stands one of the city’s most visited and respected spiritual landmarks — the Erawan Shrine. Also known as the Four-Faced Shrine, this small yet powerful sanctuary has become a place where both locals and travelers pause to pray, reflect, and make wishes.

A Brief History

The shrine was built in 1956, during the construction of the old Erawan Hotel. At the time, workers faced repeated accidents and setbacks. To restore balance and attract good fortune, a Brahmin priest advised installing a shrine dedicated to Phra Phrom (the Thai interpretation of the Hindu god Brahma, the god of creation). The moment the shrine was completed, the construction issues stopped, and the belief in its protective power took root.

Although the hotel itself was later demolished and replaced by a modern complex, the shrine remained untouched. Today, it stands as a living reminder of faith and tradition in the heart of Bangkok.

The Four Faces of Phra Phrom

The golden statue at the center depicts Phra Phrom with four serene faces, each looking in a different direction. Each face symbolizes a core blessing: • Health • Wealth • Career success • Relationships and protection

Visitors are encouraged to walk around the statue in a clockwise direction, pausing at each face to make an offering — usually flowers, incense sticks, or garlands.

Rituals and Offerings

The atmosphere at the shrine is unlike anywhere else in Bangkok. The air is filled with the scent of burning incense, marigold garlands pile up in bright yellow, and traditional Thai dance performances are regularly commissioned by worshippers whose wishes were fulfilled. It’s common to see people kneeling in prayer, bowing three times, and leaving offerings of fruit, wooden elephants, or small statues.

For many, it’s not just about asking for blessings but also about coming back to give thanks once their wishes come true. This cycle of faith keeps the shrine alive and vibrant.

A Shrine in the Middle of the City

One of the most striking things about the Erawan Shrine is its location. Surrounded by Bangkok’s modern skyline, luxury shopping centers like CentralWorld and Gaysorn, and the constant buzz of traffic, the shrine feels like a pocket of calm and devotion amidst the chaos. Whether you’re a believer or simply a curious visitor, the energy here is undeniable.

Visiting Tips • The shrine is open daily, 6:00 AM – 11:00 PM. • The best time to visit is in the early morning or evening, when the heat is softer and the atmosphere calmer. • Be respectful — dress modestly, avoid loud behavior, and follow the flow of worshippers around the shrine. • If you want to commission a Thai classical dance as thanks for answered prayers, there are booths at the side where you can make arrangements.

Why It Matters

The Erawan Shrine is more than a religious site. It represents the way Bangkok blends old traditions with modern life. For some, it’s a place of answered prayers; for others, it’s simply a window into Thailand’s spiritual culture. Either way, the Four-Faced Shrine at Erawan remains one of the city’s most...

Erawan Shrine, in Bangkok, is often called Four-Faced Buddha Shrine. It was built in 1956, under an astrologer’s advice, as part of d Erawan Hotel to offset the bad influence or to eliminate the bad karma believed to cause hotel construction mishaps and labor-injury accidents. After the Brahma statue was designed, built and enshrined in Erawan Shrine in November 1956, in general, the Hotel construction was proceeded without accidents or delay. Because of its spirit or mercy or magic power, the same statue, made of metal or other material was also casted and erected in a few other major construction or hotel sites in Thailand. Erawan Shrine is also called Thao Maha Phrom Shrine, which is actually a Hindu shrine which worships Phra Phrom, a Hindu God of Creation. But in Thai Buddhist theology, Phra Phrom is known as Lord Brahma who is full of kindness, mercy, sympathy and impartiality and is God of these 4 Virtues, and these four virtues are represented by his four faces, each delivering peaceful grace and serene virtue to the worshippers. Worshippers, especially Chinese worshippers from Hong Kong and Taiwan, believe that the four-faced god is extremely efficacious. If their wishes do come true after praying, most believers will come back to fulfill their wishes. That is why there is always no shortage of the required offerings around the Shrine’s altar. Some believers do perform singing, dancing and music themselves or hire dancers to accompany their prayers. In Erawan Shrine, the Administration Desk does offer traditional Thai-style dance troupe to the worshippers in listed price, ranging from $ 300B for 2 dancers and $750B for 8 dancers’ performance [Feb 2024 listing price], although it is called as donation or contribution to the Shrine. For worshippers who prefer to pray more sincere or seriously with the dance troupe performance members, they generally would make donation to the Shrine, via the administration desk, and then wait in line for their praying time. When their praying time does come, they generally would knell in front of the 4-faced Goddess and pray when dancers perform their dance behind the worship-prayer. The shrine is located near the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel, Bangkok, and it can be easily accessed by BTS Skytrain [station name- Chit Lom], which has clear road sign for the Shrine. Shrine does NOT allow incense and candles for worship practice from March 2020 due to health and environmental concerns. However, worshippers can buy flowers, wood elephant statues of various sizes for worship. Believers can also buy small birds for mercy release to the sky. While there are no strict rules at the shrine, it is advisable to wear clothing that cover shoulders and knees. Shrine is free for entrance and photo is allowed. Hinduism in Thailand seems to be affected by Thai culture and gradually adopts certain worship practices, religious and Architectual decoration of Thai Buddhism. Is this Thailandization for Hinduism in Thailand? Visitors may know it if they visit a few Buddhist and Hinduist temples in Bangkok.
