Truly, Captain Haddock’s are a ‘take-away’. That is, they take away from your order. Legally, there is a word that describes taking money and not providing a good/service in return. However, I hesitate to use that word because I genuinely don’t believe the poor service is the result of malice, rather, it is the result of incompetence. I made the mistake of ordering from here again (the final time). I ordered gravy as a sauce on the side. It didn’t arrive. In the past, I’ve ordered gravy and, without being instructed, they’ve put salt and vinegar on the fish and chips. Not realising this, I’ve poured on the gravy, which then ruined the entire meal. Today, anticipating a repeat performance, I stipulated: ‘no salt and vinegar on anything’, which I ordered (for clarity that I shouldn’t have to give) only for the gravy not to arrive! As for the quality of the food itself, this fish and chip shop simply would not survive in the more discerning North. Check and double check your orders and notes! Read moreWent to Captain Haddock's recently with my partner to pick up a regular fish and chips. The customer service was just absolutely amazing! The guy serving was 10/10 even offered me a free fish burger when I jokingly said I want to try it one day (I refused.) The food was amazing.
Went again twice after that, to try the fish burger and other items. Battered sausage, battered chips, lasagna. All the food has been absolutely amazing. Hot and fresh.
What really stands out is the customer service, better than what I have received at 5 star hotels before! For example, I ordered the second time, did not realise there was a loyalty card, said to the lady 'I came yesterday for fish and chips didn't realise this was here' she kindly stamped me twice! She trusted me. Second time ate inside again, staff member coming to the table to ask if I was okay and needed anything. Top notch service.
Would highly recommend and definitely...

Wasn’t disappointed. Tricky to find parking around there as it’s near the train station but after 5 ish mins I found a free spot not to far away.
Guy behind the counter was really friendly. Manners don’t cost a thing
Had the king size box and it was bigggg easily feed 2 adults I’d say 3
Tried the battered chips. They were very tasty. Got a small portion as wanted to try them.
The fish and chips were freshly cooked. Very tasty. The fish was one of the best I’ve tasted. Batter was very crispy and the fish was very fresh and flavoursome.
Had the mushy peas and curry sauce and both were nice and fresh too!
Cost £18 and I’d say it’s great value for money
Wanna try the battered mars bar next time I come. Guy said he’s working on it !
