As you can see, the day we were there was beautiful. Warm and sunny, it was a perfect day for moonstone hunting. Know what? We found some! 😁
You've got to get down and truly search. Be patient. Thousands of people go through Moonstone hunting moonstones, your patience will be rewarded with ... moonstones! Just being on the beach with your loved ones is reward enough. But let's face it. Finding a beautiful moonstone is awesome.
We not only found some nice moonstones, we found a beautiful piece of smooth, flat red stone with little hollows filled with crystals. It was almost a geode, and was certainly the find of the day.
We have many times made family trips to Cambria, usually staying at a motel outside of town. Half of us went on our bikes, half in cars for the luggage. We'd rotate those who wanted some motorcycle time onto our bikes. We always had an amazing time. With Moonstone Beach being right there at Cambria, clearly marked and easy to find, it couldn't be easier to have a fun day.
Heading north from south Orange County, some things we liked was See Canyon, south of San Luis Obispi. Drive out and you can get fresh apples and wonderful apple cider. We love Morro Bay, I got my fiancé her very first tattoo there in January 2022, a beautiful lily. Her screen name is Morg's Lily, Morg being me 😁
The ride up the coast is beautiful, and to the north of Moonstone Beach is the sea lion preserve, well worth a visit. A suggestion is to go past the first turnoff to the preserve, and go to the second one. I've always found it less crowded, and there is a nice trail to get a little closer to the sea lions. Please remember not to feed or bother them. Definitely don't go off trail to try and get closer. They are deceptively fast and aggressive.
Talking about our trip has us all ready to go again! Three weeks wasn't nearly enough. We will take another three week trip next November. We can't wait. Until then, how about you take a great trip and tell us about it? We can't wait to hear about your...
Read moreWe visited Cambria at the end of September. The beaches were enveloped in fog and mist. What a wondrous, mystical sight it was! Moonstone Beach is the opposite of it's fairer cousin in Carmel. Here the sand is a dark chocolatey brown, almost black, but speckled with millions of brightly colored pebbles. Shaped by eons of ocean cradling, these rocks are addicting. In that you want to keep hunting for more and more of them rather than simply gaze out at the magical mist rising over the gray waters. We saw many visitors down on the beach, hunting for what some call, "semi precious" moonstones. Plenty of quirky structures (made by enthusiastic visitors) made of found wood litter the beaches that are accessible by flights of stairs. But these points are not wheelchair accessible. However the boardwalks are beautiful and a walk alongside the beach on those boardwalks is a MUST. Worth visiting...
Read moreAlways a great spot to stop and enjoy the ocean close to Cambria. You can easily get down to the wider beach that is currently very rich with driftwood, driftwood structures, and moonstone hunters. With certain tides, the surf is several sneaker waves coming up a steeper shelf, so do beware with little ones.
Not sure of the moonstone situation. There could be plenty, but on our stop, two men with 5 gallon buckets made several trips to the lot with what could only be a heavy amount of moonstones /Rocks. :(
The boardwalk is very nice and accessible to all, especially those with needed wheelchair access. It's a nice walk without a lot of steep areas. Check alltrails for good descriptions.
Always a great stop. Bathrooms were being attended to, so they are usually in good shape. Parking lot can be an adventure if busy, so just stay patient and observant on...
