I've been living at Church+State for almost two years now and time after time have had to deal with extremely poor management. When I first booked an appointment to visit the place, they were over 30mins late for our appointment. I loved the 2-bed unit I saw so I applied anyway, but they took over a month to process my aplication. At that point I was worried that I had to find another place to live before my prior lease expired. When it finally came through, they were very unhelpful providing move-in info. E.g. where moving trucks can park, how to reserve the elevator, what is the correct address of the apartment building. When I moved in, I used the address they gave me to setup my internet, but the two buildings have different street numbers, so the guy had to cancel my request and create a new one, which requires then to leave and come back another day. For months I spent hours on the phone with the internet company to get my account info corrected and billed to the right address.
As long as you don't have to deal with management or leasing, things can be great. I have had lovely neighbors. I continue to love my apartment unit. Eric, who does all the maintenance and repairs is fantastic.
But about a year or so ago after management changes, things really went downhill. The trash rooms would be overflowing with trash. They refused to take recycling at some point, even though they're a LEED certified building. There is supposed to be a package delivery service for large packages but that's never been implemented. The package room is often a disaster zone, making it hard to find stuff. And they threaten to return stuff if you don't pick it up right away. Delivery people almost always struggle to find the place because the mailing address isn't on Google maps and there are no signs from the streets pointing the way. Our call box downstairs has been broken for over a month, so no one can be buzzed in anymore.
As residents we can reserve the roof for private events twice a year, so I've been trying to do this for weeks now and have had no response from management despite numerous calls, texts and emails. If you don't walk into their office to talk to them, they ignore you. And even if you go into their office, they often tell you they're busy and ask you to text or email....which obviously doesn't get you anywhere.
Numerous residents have complained about dubious utilities charges considering we can't access meters for our units and are just charged monthly by the management. I've been away for an entire month before and not using any electricity and saw my monthly utility bill go up. Definitely sketchy. It also doesn't give us the option to buy green energy, which should be provided for a building that claims to be "environmentally friendly."
The safety in the neighborhood has also been an issue. I've filmed one car robbery and witnessed another incident where they were checking cars very suspiciously. The garage was broken into my first holiday season here and multiple cars were smashed and robbed. After those events more people are parking in the garage which makes it insanely packed. I have a Subaru Crosstrek and the lines are barely a few inches wider on each side of my car. Plus there's a pillar on one side, which I have to get within a couple inches of in order for my neighbor to be able to open their car door to get out. It's riculous how packed the garage spots are.
The other thing the building does for income is rent the Lantern Room and rooftop. Whenever it's rented, residents are not allowed up there to use the amenities we all pay for in our rent. And as someone who lives in the Church building where there's only one elevator up to all the floors, including the rooftop venue, we constantly have to deal with drunken guests and outsiders parading through. That and the courtyard can be really noisy.
My unit has been nice, but the management is truly deplorable. I'm looking forward to moving out because I really can't tell what the upcharge on rent is paying for besides the...
Read moreI’ve had an excellent experience with Church and State from the beginning.
Victoria gave me a tour of the property and was so friendly and knowledgable, pointing out little details like the specific paint colors and architectural styles of the building.
Church and State is situated in one of the most fun neighborhoods in Cleveland. I first fell in love with the neighborhood. But after touring the beautiful rooftop space with an excellent view of downtown Cleveland and learning of the various amenities and the beautiful, modern and well appointed units, I knew I wanted to call Church and State home. I have not been disappointed.
When you live here, there’s always something fun to do right beyond the doorstep. But that doesn’t stop the staff from organizing community events and generally making every effort to foster a fun and inclusive community spirit.
Big shout out to Victoria, Laurel, Ethan, Eric, Rico and all the other excellent staff who are always friendly and accessible and who keep the property clean, inviting and...
Read moreMy bf and I are moving into Church & State in a few weeks and couldn't be more excited. We relocated after being in NYC the last half decade to Cleveland and toured about 15 complexes in the Winter/Spring, and decided on C&S after looking at several apartments in the building on two separate occasions.
The leasing agent, Victoria, was so sweet and knowledgeable. We met her in the Winter and she showed us around. We wanted to see more places though so we didn't decide then on a place but we kept in touch with her as C&S was our favorite so far. When we came back in the Spring, we looked at a handful more places and a had a second look at C&S, and ultimately decided this was the one. Victoria has always been very responsive via text and email, sending us updates and videos on availability of various units, and helpful without being pushy.
After having some nightmare landlords and agents in NYC, it was refreshing to have a positive experience with apartment...
