Kitty Hollow Park — Attraction in Fresno

Alright, so my family and I recently spent a Saturday at Kitty Hollow Park in Missouri City, Texas, and let me tell you, it’s a pretty sweet spot for a family day out. This place has a little something for everyone, and it’s got that laid-back vibe that makes you want to just kick back and enjoy the day. First off, the park is huge—190 acres, so there’s plenty of room to spread out. We started with a picnic under one of the eight pavilions they’ve got. These things are great—each one has picnic tables, a fire pit, and a water spigot, though you’ll need to bring your own grill stuff if you want to cook out. We snagged one of the free ones (AA-DD) since it was a weekday, but heads-up, you’ll need to reserve them on weekends. They’re only like $20 an hour with a small fee, which isn’t bad for a family gathering or birthday party. The kids were already eyeing the nearby playgrounds—there are three of them, all with different setups, so the little ones and the bigger kids both had a blast climbing and sliding. The lake was a big hit for us. My oldest wanted to try fishing, so we grabbed some rods and hit the fishing pier. It’s a nice setup, calm and quiet, with a cool view of the water. Didn’t catch much, but it was relaxing just sitting there with the breeze. There’s a gazebo nearby on a little hill that’s perfect for chilling and watching the kids run around or just soaking in the scenery. I hear they stock the lake sometimes, but you’ll need a Texas fishing license if you’re over 17. The soccer field caught my eye because my middle kid is all about soccer. It’s not the fanciest field—some folks online mentioned the goals could use replacing—but it’s solid for a casual game or practice. There’s also a basketball court and volleyball area, so if your crew’s into sports, you’re covered. The exercise stations along the paved trail were a nice touch too. I tried a few of the pull-up bars and obstacle course bits while the wife and I took a walk. The trail’s about 1.3 miles, super smooth and flat, so it’s great for strollers or if you’ve got grandparents tagging along. Now, the dog park—man, our pup had the time of his life. They’ve got two separate areas, one for small dogs and one for big ones, each with a little pond for splashing. Our lab was all about that water feature, though it can get a bit muddy after rain, so bring a towel. The dog park’s tucked toward the back, which is nice because it feels a bit more private. Just make sure your dog’s got their shots and tags, as they’re strict about that. Oh, and the historic Dew House Museum? Pretty cool. It’s this old plantation house from around 1900, moved to the park in 2006. They do tours on Sundays once a month, but we didn’t catch one this time. Still, it’s neat to walk by and know there’s a bit of history right there in the park. Gives the place some character. The whole park is clean, with tons of benches, trash cans, and restrooms (though some folks say the restrooms could use more frequent cleaning). It’s got a chill, family-friendly feel, with plenty of open space for the kids to run wild or for you to just sit and enjoy the quiet. Only downside? Some of the playground equipment and pathways could use a little TLC—there are some cracks in the pavement that might trip you up if you’re not paying attention. But overall, it’s a gem of a park. We’re already planning to come back for a barbecue with some friends. If you’re in Missouri City or nearby, Kitty Hollow’s worth a visit. I love coming here. It's one of my go to places to relax, so I'll be saying more about this place as time goes on. I don't know whether it will be in updates, or if I will eventually be allowed to leave multiple posts (seriously, how else do you track things over time?). My only complaint right now is that I wish there were more kitties and less hollow. There is a fairly large pavilion available for rent near the dog park. I peeped the prices, and they looked a bit high to me. I'm not sure whether it's because they are, or because I feel like you shouldn't have to break the bank to use the resources in your community. It could be my personal bias talking here. There's a decently sized lake that I've seen people fishing at. For those who like crossfit or those outside industrial gyms (I'm really not certain what the proper name for them is) there is a spot for that right across from the lake with quite a few activities from the...

The park left a lot to be desired. The ground was very wet along the trails which is understandable since it is a flood plain area and this was the intention but keeping kids out of the mud can be a real challenge when most of the ground is mud. The playground facilities for the kids need repair in many cases. Some of the park equipment they are supposed to play on on the playgrounds was rusty, sharp, and looked like it could cause injury. The have several play areas around the park, but only one is new. The rest are old. Also, beware of alligators. You might not see them but we had one come right up to the shore not too long ago where me and the kids were taking pictures. It looked like it was hungry. Fortunately it was not large enough to grab anyone or their pets. There are not a lot of them but since the park is surrounded by swamp and flood plains you should keep your eyes open.
