I had an iPhone since before 2010 in the "early days" of the iPhone. I've never bought the insurance or AppleCare. Recently, after all but destroying my 1TB iPhone 14 Pro, the guys at CPR on Greenville made me feel rather justified in my decision to never buy the insurance.
Stepping back a bit, I was in the City Museum in St. Louis for a quick weekend trip and had my phone in my pocket. At one point, my 2 year old took off and to try and get her, I had to invert myself to make sure she wouldn't get away. When I did this, my phone slid out of my pocket and landed on the concrete 15' below. Some nice person handed me my cell phone up through the grating that it had fallen through. Remarkably, the cell phone worked, but the back of the phone was shattered into a million pieces. The nice case on my phone prevented glass from getting everywhere, thankfully.
Concerned about my phone, I looked for repair places in the St. Louis area. I called 4-5 different places (including 2 CPR locations!) local to St. Louis and had one heck of a time trying to get them to fix my phone. Either they would fix the phone but wanted to keep it for 3 days or so (which wasn't possible, as I was only visiting for the weekend) or they strongly encouraged me to not even fix the phone, as it was "likely only superficial or aesthetic damage," or they said they'd do it really inexpensively and quickly.
I gave up and flew back to Dallas with my iPhone. I went right to this CPR location where they quoted me $300 plus tax to fix the phone. This was higher than other quotes that I'd gotten, but through my research online learned that the method in which they were proposing to fix the phone (by replacing the entire rear chassis of the unit) was the right solution, given the idiosyncrasies of the iPhone 14 Pro. Their response gave me a whole level of comfort regarding how they'd fix it. (My background is Electrical and Computer Engineering, and just talking with them, they demonstrated an additional level of proficiency in their responses with me.) As the gentleman at CPR took my phone out of the case, I got to fully appreciate how badly it was damaged--there were literally shards of glass all over the place and holes in what remained in the glass after he removed it from the case. So much for "superficial" damage...
They did have to order the part (though gave me the option to "change the color" of my iPhone, as they were replacing the entire back of it--kind of a cool feature, honestly!) but had the part in about a day and a half, ready to go. I brought them my phone and they'd repaired it--as good as new--in about 2.5 hours.
In summary: I write this long review to say a couple of things:
-Of course, it DOES matter where you take your phone to get it repaired. It's highly craft sensitive.
-Different places will suggest different fixes for your phone. Don't throw good money after bad. Get it done once, and get it done right.
-I learned in my little adventure that there are variances between CPR locations. Go to THIS location.
Thank you CPR! I hope to not see you again very soon--but if the unthinkable happens, I'll be heading your way. (And until then, I'll continue to skip the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWent to CPR repair on 2/18/2017 and paid $350 to get a replacement LCD Digitizer/Front Glass and rear glass replacement. Please note that I purchased blemished/pre-cracked front and back because they did not have new ones in stock, but I needed the phone operational ASAP. Repair went fine and phone was functional. Fast forward to a week after the repair while I am out of town. The front glass is separating from the actual LCD itself, as well as little purple dots appearing on screen. Little purple dots indicate pixel failure, and the lifted glass indicates poor adhesion. The dots continue to spread across the phone similar to a rash and eventually turn black. While trying to keep the glass itself from falling off of the LCD I try and press and hold it down to adhere it causing a very minor crack which still has nothing to do with the pixel failure of the screen. Eventually the pixel failure spreads entirely over the screen turning it completely black and non-operational.
Fast forward again to today 3/8/2017, come back into town and go to CPR repair to show them what happened and let them know that there was a faulty LCD screen put on the phone as well as the adhesion issue that was present. Instead of getting any warranty work I was told since there was a crack that there was nothing they could do about it. Also, being told that when the adhesion failure was occurring that I should have come straight there instead of trying to put the screen back down (like I can magically teleport states during work and do that). Instead they offered to sell me another screen and install for $199 and there was nothing they could do as far as warranty goes. Now why would I spend an extra $199 on another screen that clearly was faulty and should have been warrantied by them, thanks but no thanks. With that being said leaving with absolutely nothing to show for the wasted money with this company, I suggest taking your...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI went to CPR to get my water damaged phone(screen showing green lines) fixed. After cleaning and diagnostics, I was told that it needs screen replacement, costing abount $200+, but I bought this phone brand new for $280, so I thought its not worth it and accepted the fate, took my phone back. Mind it, they charge diagnostic fee before even opening the phone, so I had already paid $60. No complaint about it though, it must be their business model.
Till here my story was neutral and I thought its fair that they charged for diagnostics and it just didn't work out for me. However, I observed that volume was a lot lower than the usual and mic seemed to be not working. After doing some research, figured out that the speaker unit is completely missing. Either they deliberately removed it for reasons unknown to me or they totally forgot to put it back.
I spent entire night thinking that I was cheated. Next day, I went to store and they told that it was not positioned correctly. I'm no expert to tell for sure if that is true or if it was really not put in my phone at all. I'm more inclined to the thought that it wasn't put in at all as there is not much space in there to misplace it. I peeped thru speaker holes and could see internal circuitry, this gives me fair benefit of doubt that the speaker unit was not put in phone at all..
I leave it to the best judgment of the review reader to decide on what might have actually happened. 2 stars are for a sleepless night I spent thinking that I was cheated. Never going...
