I was born and raised in Houston. Throughout my years, I have made many trips and visits to Galveston. I wish we had a cleaner beach near to Houston, but we don't, so Galveston is it when I need a salt water breeze. I much prefer Florida's clear emerald waters and sugar white sand beaches. The temperatures are basically the same. Both areas are hot and loaded with humidity, but the atmosphere is so much prettier in Florida. I have visited Galveston in every month of the year. In my opinion, April and May are the best times to go. If you plan a trip to Galveston, remember there are several areas for Galveston proper. The "Seawall" is the most populated area. Parked cars line the street of the seawall with people unloading their gear to enjoy a day on the sand near the water. Further east you have an amazement park with rides and food. I like further west near Sea Isle and Jamaica Beach. It is less crowded and there's easy access to the beach. The communities have golf carts for rent which are also fun to ride through the neighborhood. I am partial to this area as we have a bay house in the neighborhood and a few of our friends have places near us as well. The pictures included in this review are as recent as last weekend (August 25-27, 2023) and as far back as May 2015. Only 3 stars even though I go a lot, but that's because it's close to home. (closer...
Read moreMy husband and daughter's favorite get away location. The beach is so peaceful and relaxing. Hearing the waves and enjoying the beautiful view, seeing the sunrise and sunset is mesmerizing from the island. There is a pleasure pier that has kid rides, ferris wheel and a Bubba Gump restaurant. Went back to the island after 2 years and have a few things I wanted to share. First for the ones that haven't been you have to pay to park on the seawall, there is an app you download or there is a kiosk to pay. Just discovered today that parking on the seawall at the beach is free daily after 6:00 p.m. (meters hours are 10a.m. to 6p.m.) Another tip, there is now bathrooms and shower facilities along the seawall, (was told only 5 for now, hours of use are 7am-7pm). Also Murdock's(a store on the beach) is closed on Mondays, didn't know that until today. Here you can enjoy frozen pina coladas, other alcoholic beverages and sit on their balcony and enjoy a beautiful view of the majestic dolphins swimming. A must visit is the 61st fishing pier you can fish from the pier, enjoy a refreshing drink while sitting on the upstairs patio enjoying the beautiful view and calming waves. They are open 24 hours a day 7...
Read moreSorry Galveston! I tried😢 Visited five years ago and wasn’t impressed but couldn’t really remember why. Just visited over Labor Day weekend 2025. As far as beaches go- it’s a BIG NO for me. I’m a beach snob and I promised I really tried. The sand is dirty with bits of trash everywhere. The sand is not soft or pleasing to walk on. It’s not even a pretty oceanfront as far as aesthetics are concerned. (Ex. It’s not postcard pretty) There are bits of “black stuff “ in the water. The actual water color was a non factor bc I am not judging on clarity.
Because I crave ocean air- it was still nice to walk along the shore and smell the salt air. I enjoyed seeing lots of different restaurants and shops along the strip.
Crossing the street at Seawall is hard bc there aren’t any stop signs between the traffic lights. But I’m sure that helps keeps auto traffic moving along- so not complaining about that!
There are changing stalls and showers along the seawall. It’s well lit at night with tons of light posts.
I enjoyed driving around the town to see the architecture of the classic homes both small and large.
Galveston has a lot to offer besides its ugly beach-...
