TL/DR - do yourself a favor and drive up the road to Walmart where you can buy an excellent snorkel set (including flippers) for $35.
Full review: We arrived late morning wanting to rent snorkel gear for myself and my husband. The employee we found behind the register had an airpod in and was more interested in his phone and his iced coffee than in helping us, but when we finally got his attention, he told us they don’t rent snorkel gear and that we should go down the street and rent from Snorkel Bobs, dismissing us.
Since we didn’t know that Snorkel Bobs is a real place, we thought he was kidding and then went up to a second employee who was a bit more willing to set us up with rentals.
After signing the waiver and spending time to get set up in the system, we were informed the $1/day deal is only on the prehistoric snorkel set which other reviewers claimed they nearly drowned in because they don’t work, so we opted for the traditional snorkel set. We were then informed that to rent a mask and flippers for our 14 day honeymoon that it would cost $336. For snorkel gear. For 2 people.
When he noticed our jaws on the floor standing in shock, he offered us a “special deal” of buy one get one free (which we noticed later is not special, but in fact advertised on the side of the building for all to see) - bringing the cost down to $168. For snorkel gear. For two people.
Jaws still on the floor, he asked us if we snorkel often (after seeing that we are from Boston, MA, the land famous for its incredible snorkeling and 365 day summers) and tried to persuaded us to buy our own snorkel sets. For $250 each. For just the masks. But rest assured, they were “really good quality sets”
We walked away without gear and with our wallets in tact asking ourself- why would anyone rent...
Read moreMy family and I had visited back in May and the first thing we did was come here to rent our snorkel gear. Danny had taken the time to fit all five of us into our gear as well as show us a map of his recommendations on where to go to snorkel. He had also suggested some fun excursions as well. Although we didn't have time to do the manta ray excursion that he had recommended, we did follow the map he provided of the best snorkel spots and had the best time!
The only thing I would note, however, is to ask what time you need to return the gear by. Danny had told us what time they closed shop and so we assumed that we could return them anytime on the designated day before they closed. We may have missed that information but all of us could not recall being told so. We returned the gear the day prior to leaving and was told that we were late in bringing them back. It wasn't Danny working that day but the man kindly waived it off.
All in all, I would definitely recommend to friends and family to get their gear here. One of my cousins wished that he had rented their GoPro after going to one of the recommended spots and seeing so many colorful fish. That is something that we will definitely...
Read moreJOY WAS AWESOME!!!! Thank you Joy for all your help. This review is way overdue. I came back from Kona, HI end of August and had a few things going on, I forgot to write my review. My daughter forgot her contacts at home back in CA and we found that Boss Frog's Snorkel Rentals had "prescription" goggles. We called and spoke to Joy and she was very nice and explained everything to us since my daughter has two different prescriptions on each eye and I was concerned she would not be able to go snorkeling or be able to see underwater. We went in and met with Joy and Joy took the time to show my daughter different prescriptions goggles she had and had the patience to test them out with her. My daughter and I were both very happy with the results and my daughter was able to go snorkeling in Kona. We rented the snorkeling gear for a week! Thank you Joy for taking the time and being so kind and pleasant with us. If we ever come back to Kona, HI we will definitely look you guys up. It is nice to know that great customer service still exists!!! Thank you again Joy for your help and...
