Tennessee Williams was one of America's most beloved playwrights and this is the largest exhibit of its kind that I've seen to date. The self-guided tour is precisely as long or as short as you would like it to be - if you're not terribly interested, you could probably breeze through it in 15 minutes, but if you spend a few minutes at each of the 20 stations the tour could take as long as an hour. The exhibit has a wide range of original materials and follows the life of the writer from his childhood to his death. The docent (Lynn) was very helpful, especially regarding where we could find information on specific plays (as well as which plays are more obscure and difficult to find in print or in film). All in all, this exhibit is an economical way to learn more about the writer and his connection to the Key West area and I would certainly recommend a visit to anyone with an interest in Williams' life and the impact it had on...
Read moreJust like Key West - an unexpected gem built from respect and affection of the people who live here! Can't honestly say I even knew this town was a home for this great American author. But I can't begin to say how impressed I was to spend some time inside and to learn about him. This little building on Truman shares the story of a man appreciated by so many for his talents, as told by people who knew and loved the man as a person; or so I felt as I walked through the exhibits. We had no narrator to lead us; instead we saw Tennessee Williams as told by the memories, ephemera, artwork and pictures gathered together. This is a "thinkers" exhibit so it will be as short (less than ten minutes if you breeze through) or as long (over thirty in my case) as you care...
Read moreNice place, not very nice people. Got here a little late for an event in the gardens with some of my friends reading poetry. The event posting on Facebook said it was 2 hours long so I thought I’d catch the last half hour at least and mingle with my fellow poets. The looks from the people inside as I biked up should’ve warned me. As soon as I stepped inside I was abruptly told “We’re closed!” I explained why I was there and was then told quite tersely, “That’s over!” And was walked to the door. I was going to make a donation in appreciation for giving us poets a stage, but never even got to say that. Guess I’ll give my...
