The legendary Cannery Row is a must stop place if you're in the area. The ocean is there for ocean lovers. There's many fine food venues that cater to a variety of tastes, but of course also serve top notch seafood, and the cliche, but must-have clam chowder in a bread bowl. There's souvenir shops and other service vendors. All the people merchants and tourists alike were friendly. There were face painting artists as well for kids, in addition to shops having merchandise to cater to young audiences. The only reason I knock off one star for this otherwise perfect place to explore is for parking. It can be challenging to find. We parked in Andronico's Grocery parking lot on 900 Lighthouse Ave and walked into the neighboring visitor center for info, then set out to walk the Row. We came back after spending a few hours to a $48 City of Pacific Grove parking ticket. I am not one to shun nor downplay my responsibility. We could have looked harder for the signs. But the signs that state that the lot was time limited are few, small, and inconspicuous. There are no markings painted in the stall lines either. After we came back to our now ticketed vehicle, we decided to observe the parking enforcement. It turns out that there is a safety vested person that stands near the front doors of Andronico's and watches the lot. We even nodded at the guy earlier on our way to the Row when we first walked by after going to the visitor center thinking to ourselves how nice it was that someone was there concerned for safety. Little did we know safety was NOT his primary function. Did he say anything to us? Ask us our intent? Nope. And we watched this fella let 3 more FAMILIES walk by him and offer no advice. As a matter of fact as soon as his "targets" were out of sight, he would walk up to the vehicle and place 2 chalk marks on the rear driver side tires. Since Andronico's is a grocery store we had all intents of purchasing food and supplies for our hotel room, but getting a parking ticket without any friendly warning turned our intent to patronize a (local??? there was a semi trailer labeled Safeway in their dock) store into nothing but disdain for that merchant. Again Cannery Row is a must stop that is great for all the family. You won't be disappointed by the natural beauty and history. The other senses of hearing, smell, and taste are courted by what the Row has to offer. - just pay attention to...
Read moreWe decided to visit Cannery Row in Monterey Bay, and it truly exceeded our expectations. The area is brimming with exciting activities and a wide variety of stores to explore. While parking can be a bit challenging, there are ample spots available outside of the parking structure. If you prefer not to pay for all-day parking, there are many places where you can park for free for up to one hour.
Cannery Row boasts an impressive selection of restaurants, offering something for every palate. The lively atmosphere was enhanced by the multitude of people who were clearly enjoying their day in the area. For an extra treat, I highly recommend taking the Highway One route, as it offers breathtaking scenery on the way to Monterey, if you have the opportunity to do so.
Initially, we had planned to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. However, we arrived near closing time and decided to take a leisurely stroll around Cannery Row instead. It turned out to be a fantastic choice, as we discovered the numerous attractions it had to offer. I wholeheartedly recommend Cannery Row to anyone seeking a delightful experience and a breath...
