When my wife and I stumbled upon Troya Turkish Delight & Baklava during our day on Cannery Row, we werenāt entirely sure what to expect. What we found was a cozy, inviting cafĆ© that turned out to be one of the highlights of our afternoon. Sometimes the simplest stopsājust sitting down, sharing coffee and sweetsāturn into the most memorable experiences, and this was exactly that kind of moment.
The first thing that caught our eye was the display case filled with colorful Turkish delights and trays of freshly prepared baklava. The presentation alone made us pause, and before long, we were both pointing at different treats we wanted to try. The staff was friendly and patient, helping us choose a nice mix while recommending that we pair our snacks with their authentic Turkish coffee. That suggestion was spot-on.
Turkish coffee is unlike any other style of coffee. Itās strong, bold, and deeply aromatic, with a touch of ceremony in the way itās served. When our cups arrived, beautifully presented, the rich aroma alone had me excited for that first sip. It was smooth but powerful, a perfect counterbalance to the sweetness of the delights on the table. My wife and I couldnāt help but smile at each other thereās something about enjoying coffee prepared this way that feels both intimate and cultural, like being transported across the world without leaving Cannery Row.
The Turkish delights themselves were a wonderful surprise. Light, chewy, and subtly sweet, they paired beautifully with the coffee. We tried a variety some with pistachio, some dusted with powdered sugar and each had its own unique flavor. The baklava, layered with crisp phyllo and honey, was rich but not overpowering, the kind of dessert you savor slowly. Sharing bites back and forth with my wife while sipping coffee made it more than just a snack; it was an experience.
What stood out most to me wasnāt just the food or the coffee, though it was the overall atmosphere. Troya has an authenticity that makes you feel like youāve discovered a hidden gem. Itās not flashy or trying too hard; instead, itās comfortable, welcoming, and focused on what it does best: serving quality Turkish sweets and coffee in a relaxing setting. Sitting there with my wife, sipping coffee and people-watching along Cannery Row, I realized just how much I appreciated that.
By the time we left, we both agreed that this was a must-do for anyone visiting the area. Cannery Row is full of places to eat and drink, but Troya offers something truly different. Itās a chance to slow down, try something unique, and enjoy an authentic taste of Turkish hospitality in the middle of Monterey.
If you find yourself on Cannery Row, do yourself a favor and stop into Troya Turkish Delight & Baklava. Order the Turkish coffee, pick out a selection of sweets to share, and give yourself time to really enjoy the moment. Itās not just about the food itās about the experience, and itās one Iād recommend to anyone...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've been coming here since the first month it opened years ago. Being in SF, that means I only swing by if I'm in the area, however, I ALWAYS stop by if I'm in the area. The coffee is strong and delicious, served in the small ornate kahve fincani, along with a small glass of water to help your palette. The Turkish delight and baklava are lightly sweet and varied in their richness and textures. The displays are colorful and appetizing, and the pieces being sold by weight are worth the price, even if it feels a little high (I've yet to find a Turkish confectionary that serves the sweets this fresh). The first time we visited, the gentleman was so gracious to us being there (we were the only ones on a random Tuesday) that my boyfriend and I agreed: when in Monterey, we have to get Turkish delight and coffee. My favorite flavors of traditional delight are rose water, pistachio and orange. If you're going for the log shaped ones, I would highly suggest the pistachio hazelnut. The gentlemen behind the counter are happy to let you try, and their samples are generous considering the richness of their goods! I personally think the more traditional flavors are nicer, but be adventurous! You'll be surprised what flavor combinations really work. A box of one of every flavor delight plus some other pieces set me back about $26, which, for a confection I cannot find often, is quite a good deal with how soft and chewy they still are, fresh from Turkiye as well! I consider this fair for a high-tourism spot and do not mind braving the throngs of tourists to come here. The service is also warm and top notch. They immediately provided wet wipes when they saw my 7 year old smearing chocolate on herself from her serving and checked in with my party often. They informed me they now ship their goods as well, so I will be sure to order from...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreBEWARE!!!! This place is a total RIP-OFF!! Unfortunately the owner (Wail/Wael from Palestine) set this store as a trap to fool and still money from locals and tourists by selling the worst baklava that I have tried in my life! I got there during the month of Ramadan and I ordered 2 small boxes of mixed baklava, each box has 8 pieces (See pics) the weigh was 2.54 lb!! and the price was $110.46 (see pic)!! (basically about $7 per piece). While preparing my order, the owner was extensively bragging about the quality of his product and how is authentically hand-made and shipped directly from Turkey..etc!! Well, since I could not sample anything at the store due to fasting, I gave the guy the benefit of a doubt and I told myself it may could be something special.. then I decided to give it a try. Now let's talk about the product when I tasted at home, it would have been worth it if at least the baklava tasted close to something like any other baklava!! The taste was horribly bad, not freshly made at all, FILO was very soggy and greasy, the pistachios tasted very soggy and old.. there is no doubt that Troya baklava have collected tons of bacteria by seating on the rack for long days behind the deceiving clean glass! We ended up throwing everything away.. Not only that, you immediately get stomachache and you start feeling like vomiting. In fact, we had to go to ER that night due to one of the kids consumed one baklava and got food poisoned. If you really care about your health, do yourself a favor and DO NOT even get close to that store! The owner has become expert on using predatory sales techniques to steal locals & tourist money with NO quality product to offer! with one objective on his mind which is to cover his rent/electricity/other expenses by charging an...
